It freed makeup lovers from the chokehold of super-dark, heavy, and precise brows and ushered in the fluffy, imperfect, your-brows-but-better look we’re still loving. The brush-on pomade was originally launched with just three shades—Blond, Brown, and Black. Clear launched in 2017, and in 2020, redheads finally got to play with the launch of Auburn. And now, the brand is here with two new additions—Grey and Dark Brown. Plus, the container is 20 percent bigger.

“The main thing with brow gels is getting a good brush and finding the right tone to match your hair color,” says Jimena Garcia, a brow artist who works in New York and Los Angeles. With these new Glossier shades, more people can find a match with ease. Grab the one that’s closest to your shade for a natural look, or go a shade deeper for some added drama.

The new Glossier Boy Brow shades launched on June 26, and shoppers are loving them. “After being sent the new shade dark brown as a gift, I’ve worn it every day since I received it, and every day I love it more,” writes one reviewer. “The shade brown was fine for me and I used it every day, but since using dark brown I realized how much I love a slightly darker brow. This shade is absolutely perfect for anyone with darker hair.”

Model on the left is wearing Dark Brown, model on the right is wearing Grey.

Boy Brow was inspired by mustache pomade and has a creamy formula powered by beeswax and carnauba to provide a flexible, lightweight hold to define, thicken, and shape brows. It coats hairs without stiffening or flaking over time.

Plus, it contains conditioning ingredients like nourishing oleic acid, smoothing lecithin, and hydrating hyaluronic acid to keep your brows strong and healthy. According to Joshua Zeichner, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, conditioning ingredients “soften and plump the hair shafts themselves.”

Because Boy Brow has such a small brush, you can really get in there and style your brows just the way you want. “Brushing them up makes them look thicker, and it automatically creates a wider brow,” says Garcia. “When you brush to the side, it’s beautiful.” For a more natural, subtle brow, you can brush up the beginning of the brow and then brush sideways for the rest.

This Over-the-Counter Eyelash Serum Targets the 5 Signs of Lash Aging, and Made My Nearly-Invisible Lashes Look Like Extensions in a Matter of Weeks https://www.wellandgood.com/obagi-nu-ci-eyelash-enhancing-serum/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 23:00:03 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1083561 My eyelashes have always been somewhat of a sore spot for me. While they’ve got nothing on Elizabeth Taylor’s famous double-set, with a couple of coats of mascara, I could bat my lashes with the best of them. The source of my insecurity, then, actually had nothing to do with their length—it was all about their color.

I was born with chimeric eyelashes and eyebrows, meaning that those on the left side of my face are blonde and those on the right are brown. It’s never been totally clear whether this asymmetry was the result of some weird genetic mutation or it’s merely a symptom of my vitiligo, but for as long as I can remember, I’ve essentially looked like a spliced photo of two different people. And the worst part of all was that the blonde side was so blonde that my lashes weren’t even visible from more than a foot or two away.

The only thing that finally offered me some solace was mascara, which I started wearing in my teenage years and swore never to stop. When the pandemic hit a few years ago, however, I discovered the joy of an occasional day (or week) off of makeup. I enjoyed it so much, in fact, that even when the world started opening back up and I found myself interacting with someone other than my dog, I wasn’t in any hurry to return to mascara seven days a week.

At the same time, I didn’t want my blonde eyelashes to all but disappear without the help of a hefty coat of black, so I started thinking of alternative solutions, and a fellow beauty aficionado recommended an eyelash serum.

Although I was no stranger to the category—my job as a beauty editor ensured I always knew about the latest and greatest lash products—I had never really considered that they may offer some assistance to my little lash disappearing act. I figured it was worth a shot, and officially commenced my search for the best serum. There was one option that had been around longer than any other and had consistently achieved great results, but it required a prescription, which I decided would be too big a hassle if I wound up using it long-term. Then, as though the eyelash gods had been smiling down upon me, I was invited to try a brand-new, just-launched eyelash serum that claimed to deliver the same results as its prescription-grade counterpart but was available over the counter: Obagi Nu-Cil Eyelash Enhancing Serum ($120).

I had heard through the beauty grapevine that the new serum was truly something to behold, but as always, I remained dubious. I combed through every inch of the clinical trials and was admittedly impressed. I knew the true test of Nu-Cil’s abilities would come only from trying it on my own lashes, though. And after a month of applying it nightly, I understood the hype.

Nu-Cil is designed to stimulate the growth phase of the lash cycle and improve the overall appearance of lashes—but its impressive results are thanks to Obagi’s proprietary NouriPlex technology, which targets the five signs of lash aging (volume, density, pigment, length, and condition). The formula contains a blend of four ingredients: biotin, which is known to support keratin production and help thicken and lengthen lashes; dehydrolatanaprost, which targets the anagen phase of the lash cycle; sodium hyaluronate to nourish and moisturize lashes and enhance volume; and panthenol to increase shine and soften lashes. It’s this combination of ingredients that Obagi says allows the serum to not only lengthen lashes but also increase their fullness and density while improving their pigment—the very mission I was looking to accomplish with my own lashes.

I’ve now been using the Nu-Cil Eyelash Enhancing Serum (and its partner, the Nu-Cil Eyebrow Boosting Serum, for my beloved blonde brow) for roughly two years, and it’s given me the bold, long, dense, and most importantly, visible lashes I’ve always dreamed of. And more than that, the serum has given me the confidence I long needed to ditch the mascara now and then (without even batting an eyelash).

‘I’m a Dermatologist With Alopecia, and This Serum Is The Only Thing That’s Made My Sparse Brows Look Thick and Full’ https://www.wellandgood.com/obagi-medical-nu-cil-eyebrow-boosting-serum/ Wed, 21 Jun 2023 23:00:19 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1079195 Mona Gohara, MD, has struggled with alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease where your body attacks your hair cells, for 21 years. She’s dealt with thinning hair, bald spots, and sparse brows. As a board-certified dermatologist, she has access to the best of the best products and treatments, but nothing has grown out her brows like the Medical Nu-Cil Eyebrow Boosting Serum from Obagi.

“I started using it last August and by October I noticed they were so much fuller,” says Dr. Gohara, who is based in Hamden, Connecticut. “I get a blow dry once a week and my friend who blow dries my hair was like, ‘Holy shit, you’ve got brows!’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God, I know!”

“I had my genetics, my autoimmune condition, my age, and the fact that I was one of those ’90s over-plucking chicks all going against me. And this somehow gave me brows.” — Mona Gohara, MD

Obagi Nu-Cil Eyebrow Boosting Serum ($145) uses a blend of lipids, hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5, and biotin to promote growth.

“Hyaluronic acid is a humectant so it absorbs water into the hair so the brows look thicker,” says Dr. Gohara. “And then the fullness comes from lipids that help to increase the anagen, which is the growth phase of the hair follicle. Probably what was happening with my hair follicle was that my growth phase was really short. And my shedding and resting phases were a lot longer. This ingredient basically protracted the growth phase, so my brows actually had a chance to grow, which never was happening before.”

The Obagi Eyebrow Serum is working to give Dr. Gohara the fullest brows she ever had despite her autoimmune condition, genetic age-related hair loss, and the fact that she overplucked when she was younger.

“I’m 47, I’m not a spring chicken. And when you get older, the hair on your head, your eyelashes, and your eyebrows, all just thin out,” she says. “And in my generation when I was growing up, it was cool to have like really thin over-plucked eyebrows. So when you do that you can scar the hair follicle and when you scar the hair follicle, it’s not gonna grow anymore. I had my genetics, my autoimmune condition, my age, and the fact that I was one of those ’90s over-plucking chicks all going against me. And this somehow gave me brows.”

Additionally, Dr. Gohara has heard from many others that this serum helped them out too.

“I’ve recommended it to a lot of people and thus far nobody said that it hasn’t worked,” says Dr. Gohara. And when she shared her experience with the product on her Instagram story, “a couple of people were like, ‘Yes, I’ve used this too and it’s amazing.”

This serum has grown out Dr. Gohara’s brows without causing any hyperpigmentation or irritation. For the first two months, she used it every day. Now, she uses it once or twice a week for maintenance. Pro tip: Use this serum in the morning.

“I was using it at night and it’s so effective at growing hair that I was getting hair on my eyelids because I would rub against my pillow as I slept and it would spread,” says Dr.Gohara. “I looked like a werewolf because I would have hair on my eyes, which I just shaved and I didn’t care cause I finally had eyebrows, I didn’t really give a crap. But now I use it during the day.”

So if your brows are sparse and you’re looking to get them fuller, the Obagi Nu-Cil Eyebrow Boosting Serum is a must-buy.

This New Volumizing Mascara Makes My Short, Curly Lashes Look Three Times Their Normal Size https://www.wellandgood.com/thrive-causemetics-volumizer-mascara/ Wed, 21 Jun 2023 16:59:41 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1078541 My lashes have always been a struggle. They’re short and extremely curly, so even the most lengthening mascaras don’t do much to change their appearance. Instead of trying to fake length, I’ve learned that I get more of a dramatic effect when I lean into volumizing formulas. And the latest launch from Thrive Causemetics is my current favorite.

Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Volumizer Mascara ($25) is a new volumizing mascara that’s made with the brand’s proprietary Power Peptide Lash Booster, a blend of three peptides that deeply conditions each lash to encourage fullness and length. It also has sodium hyaluronate and organic pea sprout extract to nourish your lashes. These ingredients and more come together in a long-lasting, flake-free product.

As good as this formula is, when it comes to appearance, I find that the brush matters way more than what’s in the mascara. Thrive’s Lift + Curl Dual-Bristle Brush is made with a blend of long and short bristles to separate lashes and coat them with product so you get a super fluffy look.

It’s available in both black and brown. Below, I’m wearing the black option on just my left eye (top and bottom lashes) and you can really see how it adds so much interest to my eyes. It makes my lashes actually visible and I’m obsessed. The brown option is perfect if you don’t want a more natural look, especially if have lighter hair.

I’m wearing the new Thrive volumizing mascara on my left eye and nothing on my right eye.

The Thrive Causemetics Volumizer Mascara seriously delivers. Because my lashes are short, I feel like they’re invisible without mascara. And if I use mascara that clumps, I’m left looking like I have three lashes. This mascara separates them evenly so each one can shine.

If you’re looking for length and volume, Thrive Causemtics founder Karissa Bodnar recommends putting this mascara on first and then adding a layer of Thrive’s Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara ($25). To get a teensy bit of length without switching products, I follow the advice I got years ago from celebrity makeup artist Camara Aunique to first apply her mascara to each eye, from root to tip. Then, to add a second coat, begin to add the mascara at the tip of the lashes, and then work down to the root, to lengthen and draw out the lashes.

To define your lashes and get a bold and fluffy look, the Thrive Causemetics Volumizer Mascara is exactly what your makeup bag needs.

I Tested the Lash Serum Dermatologists and Ophthalmologists Love for 2 Months, and It Gave Me XL Lashes Without Any Negative Side Effects https://www.wellandgood.com/olaplex-lashbond-building-serum/ Wed, 21 Jun 2023 00:00:47 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1078375 My foray into the world of beauty began in 7th grade when I picked up a mascara wand and globbed the product around my lashes to create what I thought was the perfect baby-doll look. While my technique has improved exponentially over the years, my desire for XL lashes has remained the same. I’ve tested countless mascaras, and have even committed to heating and curling my lashes for the sake of the cause, but I recently noticed that my once-voluminous lashes have started lacking—it wasn’t uncommon for me to see tiny hairs on my face or in the sink after washing my face at the end of the day.

Being a beauty writer, I go above and beyond to care for my skin (hello, 20-step nightly skin-care routine) and hair (I haven’t met a scalp treatment or exfoliant that I didn’t love), but my lashes? Not so much. Given the fallout I was experiencing, though, I was ready to stop neglecting my lashes and finally try a serum to help maintain them—and maybe even grow back some of what I’d lost.

But! I had a bit of trepidation about incorporating a lash serum into my already-dense routine, given the anecdotes I’ve heard about their propensity to cause darkening around the eyes, severe irritation, and iris discoloration. Many lash-growth serums on the market are made with prostaglandins (or their analogs), which is what causes these side effects to happen. So when I heard about Olaplex’s Lashbond Building Serum ($68), which mimics the results of prostaglandins-based serums without actually using the ingredient, I was eager to try it.

What to know about prostaglandins

Prostaglandins analogs, originally used to treat glaucoma, stimulate lash growth and are the active ingredients in the FDA-approved eyelash growth serum, Latisse.

Inna Lazar, optometrist and founder of Pro Eye Care in Greenwich and Darien, CT, explains that though prostaglandins-based serums can stimulate the hair growth phase of lashes, promoting fuller and longer lashes, the reward may not be worth the risk. “Side effects of lash serums include allergic reactions, eye irritation, and pigment changes,” she says. “Key ingredients causing these effects can be bimatoprost and isopropyl cloprostenate, which are prostaglandin analogs. They are associated with darkening of the iris, skin around the eyes, unwanted hair growth and atrophy of orbital fat. Other ingredients, like certain preservatives, can cause eye irritation.” What’s more, unwanted hair growth can occur on the eyelids, cheeks, or surrounding areas due to incorrect application. In other words, these serums can be an aesthetic nightmare.

Though there are many lash serums on the market that are formulated without irritants (you’ll often find these marketed as lash “conditioners” instead of growth serums) Olaplex’s option offers something a little different. Made with Olaplex’s well-known bond-building technology (think Olaplex No.3), it strengthens and grows a healthier-looking lash in a similar way that the technology helps to repair damaged hair.

How does Olaplex Lashbond Building Serum work?

“Olaplex Lashbond Building Serum safely targets five top lash concerns without the unwanted effects: lash length, volume and density, loss and shedding, dry and brittle lashes, and lack of natural lift and curl,” says Tiffany Libby, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and spokesperson for the brand. “It is the only lash serum on the market that uses next-generation Olaplex Peptide Complex Technology and exclusive, patented Olaplex Bond Building Technology.”

Safe for all skin types and contact lens wearers, this peptide-based serum is also formulated with hyaluronic acid and biotin. “The formula uses chains of amino acids to strengthen and protect existing lashes, reducing breakage and enhancing natural growth,” says Dr. Lazar. “They’re generally milder and less likely to cause side effects, but they may not deliver as dramatic results as prostaglandin-based serums. It’s about balancing desired outcomes and potential risks.”

To see maximum results from Olaplex Lashbond, Dr. Libby advises using it on clean, dry skin. “I recommend using it twice daily, consistently, and you’ll start to see results within 1-2 months,” she says. To use, simply “dip the brush into the tube once and apply it to the skin along the upper lash line on both eyes. Do not wash it off. Allow to dry for at least 90 seconds before applying other eye products. There is no need to apply to the lower lash line, as the product will migrate to the lower lash line through blinking. Applying the product directly to the bottom lash could lead to irritation in the eye area.”

Olaplex conducted a 12-week consumer perception clinical study on the serum, which showed that most participants who followed Dr. Libby’s use instructions saw healthier-looking lashes after two weeks of use. After four weeks, participants in the study saw fuller-looking lashes. Results will, of course, vary from person to person, but I for one was excited to try the serum knowing that many users experienced notable changes in the density and volume of their lashes.

My Experience With the Product

After using the product for the recommended two full months, both morning and night, I was able to achieve small, yet noticeable, results with my lashes. After two weeks, I noticed less of my lashes shedding. And after a month and a half, they looked slightly longer and more dense. Its effectiveness was most evident when I put mascara on top of it, because very little product made my lashes look almost fake—it seemed as if the serum made for a better mascara canvas. Now, when I coat my lashes in mascara, they look effortlessly long and voluminous. I am extremely happy with the result and intend on continuing to use the product to maintain my results.

These 10 Waterproof Drugstore Mascaras Outlasted My Sweatiest Workout Sessions and Didn’t Smear Once, Even in the Scorching Texas Heat https://www.wellandgood.com/waterproof-drugstore-mascaras/ Tue, 06 Jun 2023 15:00:03 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1071545 Even though I’m a minimalist when it comes to makeup, there are a few products that I simply can’t go without. In addition to a hydrating lip oil and a dab of cream blush, you won’t catch me outside without a couple swipes of mascara. I like to treat my mascaras like sunscreen—it has to be waterproof. Since I’m constantly sweating (no thanks to the Texas heat and daily workouts), a waterproof mascara is an absolute must.

But not just any waterproof mascara—one that doesn’t melt into my eyes or leave me looking like a raccoon in the middle of a weight-training session. I go hard in the gym, and I expect my mascara go hard, too. This means no smearing, dripping, or running down my face. It also means giving my eye lashes enough volume and curl that they still look like lashes—not a lacquered, spiky mess.

Ahead, you’ll find the best waterproof drugstore mascaras, most of which have outlasted even my sweatiest workout sessions without smearing once, even in the scorching Texas heat. Out of the 20 mascaras I sprinted, lifted, and trained in, these are the 10 worth a spot in your gym bag.

The best waterproof drugstore mascaras, at a glance:

What makes a mascara waterproof?

While formulas will vary from mascara to mascara, most waterproof mascaras will have silicone-based ingredients like dimethicone copolyol to hold up curls; this polymer is commonly found in hair products to control frizz.

How to remove waterproof mascara?

“For waterproof mascara, you want something with an oil so it dissolves and removes the mascara,” says Kavita Mariwalla, MD, a dermatologist based in West Islip, New York. You can also remove waterproof mascara by using a pre-cleanse balm, according to Tobi Henney, a celebrity makeup artist. “My go-to is by Rationale. You simply massage into the skin and use a warm face cloth to remove the mascara,” Henney tells us.

Essence, Double Trouble Waterproof Mascara — $6.00

If you’re looking for that va-va-voom, can I introduce you to Essence’s Double Trouble Mascara? It boasts a volumizing formula that delivers full lashes in just a couple of swipes. After a hefty leg day (squats included), this mascara withstood the sweat-test and kept my lashes looking full, plush, and voluminous. The double-sided wand is a nice touch; one side is for lengthening and the other side can be used to curl flat lashes. Also nice is the paraben-, fragrance-, alcohol-, and oil-free formulation. It keeps my sensitive eye lids happy even when I’m a dripping sweat ball.

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Lifts and lengthens lashes
  • Waterproof
  • Free of irritants

Cons:

  • Requires a couple of coats

Since I have sensitive eyes, I have to be cautious about hard-to-remove mascaras, but that was far from the case with this one. After a couple of water splashes, this mascara came off in itty bitty chunks. Volumizing, lightweight, and easy to remove, L’Oréal Paris’ Age Perfect Lash Magnifying Mascara is mascara you’ll want in your beauty regimen.

Maybelline New York’s Lash Sensational Sky High Waterproof Mascara is one that won’t budge. Even during legs days or sweaty walks outdoors, this mascara walks the walk and actually holds up. It’s all thanks to the waterproof formula, which is infused with bamboo extract to keep lashes long, thick, and full. During workouts, I didn’t experience flaking or smudging. One thing worth noting is that this mascara is hard to remove without a balm or oil. I tried washing my face with water, and the mascara didn’t come off—a testament to how strong and resilient this mascara really is.

Essence, I Love Extreme Crazy Volume Waterproof Mascara — $5.00

Aptly named, Essence’s mascara is a volumizer and lengthener all in one tube. The long-lasting formula prevents your mascara from dripping and boasts a long brush that works to coat lashes. Since the brush wasn’t angled, it was harder to reach the inner corners of my eyes, but this was an effective mascara nonetheless. What I also love is that it’s free of parabens, fragrances, and alcohol. Gyms days, hot girl walks, and runs are no match for this mascara.

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Delivers length and volume
  • Free of parabens, fragrance, and alcohol

Cons:

  • Can clump lashes
  • Brush may not grab all lashes
Maybelline New York, Lash Sensational — $5.00

For fuller lashes, I reach for Maybelline New York’s Lash Sensational Mascara. It applies on smooth and gives my lashes more oomph during leg and upper body days at the gym. My favorite part of the mascara is the angled brush; it coats every single lash. Even my lashes in my inner corner get attention. If I want more volume, I just apply another coat to create a fan-like look. If there’s anything I’ve learned from using this mascara, it’s that it doesn’t play or skimp on quality.

Pros:

  • Contact lens safe
  • Volumizing
  • Can be removed with Micellar water

Cons:

  • May clump for some
Neutrogena, Hydro Boost Waterproof Plumping Mascara — $9.00

This ‘Falsies’ Mascara Stood Up to 3+ Hours of Crying and Sweating at a Taylor Swift Concert https://www.wellandgood.com/maybelline-falsies-surreal-extensions-mascara/ Sat, 03 Jun 2023 21:00:02 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1071719 The internet is replete with content laying out exactly what you need to do to prepare for a Taylor Swift concert: Get there early, wear comfortable shoes, make sure your stuff is packed into a stadium-approved clear bag, prepare for the best night of your life, et cetera et cetera.  One thing that none of these (countless) listicles and TikTok videos mention, though, is to wear long-lasting mascara like the Maybelline The Falsies Surreal Extensions Mascara ($10).

For me, the tears started during Swift’s first “Era” (you try listening to the lyrics “Who could ever leave me, darling?/But who could stay?” without crying), and didn’t stop until she’d hit the closing notes of “All Too Well” nearly two hours later. That, combined with the sweat that dripped down my face for 200 straight minutes as I danced and screamed along to “Shake It Off” and “You Belong With Me” on an unseasonably warm May evening in New Jersey, gave me little hope for what my makeup would look like when I got home well past 1 a.m.

But to my surprise, after (*checks notes*) eight sweat-and-tear-filled hours, my mascara hadn’t so much as budged. Thank you, Maybelline The Falsies Surreal Extensions Mascara for being a true ride or die.

Despite not technically being waterproof, the mascara—which was applied to my lashes (along with some artfully placed eye gems) by a Maybelline makeup artist before the show—had the type of staying power that lash dreams are made of. And for $10, to boot.

The fact that the mascara survived my T. Swift behavior isn’t the only thing I love about it. For starters, this stuff lives up to its name. It made my lashes look long and curled—so much so that you could swear I had actual falsies on. The brand promises a 36-percent increase in length, plus 10X volume, and I can confirm that it delivered. This is because of the mascara’s hybrid fiber technology, which delivers different-sized fibers that build on each other to amp up your lashes’ oomph. They’re delivered on a helix-shaped brush with long, twisted bristles that coat every lash seamlessly and without clumps.

Unlike other long-lasting mascaras, which tend to be drying and thus wreak havoc on your delicate lash hairs, this one is formulated with nourishing ingredients to avoid any discomfort. It didn’t irritate my eyes, which is typically a tall order considering I wear contact lenses (thankfully, this stuff is ophthalmologist tested). Plus, it stood up to my allergy-induced itching and tearing, and didn’t leave me looking like a raccoon the way most mascaras do this time of year.

What I love most about the product, though, is how easy it is to remove. Despite its staying power, a single swipe with a micellar water-dipped cotton round was enough to melt it away, no streaks or smears to speak of.

And don’t just take my word for it: It’s got more than 22,500 five-star ratings on Amazon, with fans calling it a “miracle worker for your lashes” and confirming that it really does “look as if [you] had fake eyelashes on.” And another reviewer writes: “I’ve been using this mascara for about a year now. As a professional makeup artist I’ve used multiple different mascaras including some with a heavy price tag. This mascara does the job and is very reasonably priced. I am very pleased with the length and separation of the lashes when using this mascara. I have not noticed any clumping.” Another says: “Gives length like Sky High but the volume is amazing! My lashes look fabulous!”

All to say: If you’ve got a blank space in your beauty routine, this mascara deserves a spot.

Wearing Colorful Eyeliner Was the Dopamine-Boosting Beauty Hack I Didn’t Know I Needed https://www.wellandgood.com/colorful-eyeliner/ Thu, 01 Jun 2023 14:00:03 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1070361 I don’t tie my self-esteem directly to my appearance, but I can’t deny that when I look good, I feel good. Makeup is a quick way for me to boost my aesthetic and, by the aforementioned logic, self-esteem. However, if I spend hours trying to achieve that ~perfect~ look, I get frazzled and wish I’d spent less time getting ready.

In turn, I experience borderline-debilitating anxiety that smudges any look-good-feel-good attempt. Luckily, my roommate inadvertently found a way for me to don an edgy makeup look that relaxes me as I create it: painting my lids with colorful eyeliner.

On one of our recent trips to Ulta, my roomie beelined to NYX’s Vivid Brights Colored Liquid Eyeliner ($9), saying it was perfect for #hotgirlsummer. I love looking at bright colors, and this felt like an easy way to incorporate vibrant hues into my everyday life, so I got the Lilac Link shade—a pastel purple.

Since then, I’ve spent six weeks experimenting with colorful eyeliner. In that timeframe, I realized that my new makeup practice boosted my confidence in my creativity, my social skills, and myself.

Makeup artists and psychologists agree: colorful eyeliner is a dopamine dupe

I’m not saying I’m lazy, but I’m also not not saying that. To save time, I prefer to keep my routines as basic as they come. Essentially, I drink my water, apply my sunscreen, and mind my business. That’s it.

Because of that, I’m usually a very bubbly and cheerful person. However, there are times when the news makes me sad or life gets me down in other ways. With my new makeup routine, I noticed that I smiled more at myself in the mirror—even on my more challenging days. Seeing those colors on my face made me feel happier than I would’ve sans eyeliner.

“Colorful eyeliners are my go-to for summer,” says Tara KP Troszak, a makeup artist and writer based in California. “They are such a fun and easy way to make any eye look pop.” As far as her tips for creating show-stopping lid looks? “My favorite way to wear colorful liner is in the waterline with a neutral shadow. I also love a bright graphic wing when I’m feeling extra creative,” she says.

It’s not just makeup artists who think there are perks to painting your face. According to a 2020 qualitative study titled Paint a Better Mood? Effects of Makeup Use on YouTube Beauty Influencers’ Self-Esteem, “Makeup use may have a more direct effect on self-esteem if internally motivated and viewed as a mechanism for creativity, mastery, agency, and human connection.”

And that’s precisely how I was using it—as creative expression and an icebreaker.

“[Creating looks with colorful] eyeliner can establish a more playful, casual, fun, or flirty mood,” says Sanam Hafeez, PsyD, a neuropsychologist and director of Comprehend the Mind. “You wouldn’t necessarily wear blue eyeliner to a [corporate] job because it kind of gives you this effect or feeling that you’re ready to party.”

I actually wore bright liner looks to multiple work functions—as a lifestyle writer, a nanny, and to my cousin’s wedding, garnering compliments no matter the occasion. The compliments are great, of course, but there are other, more hard-hitting benefits of using my eyelids as a canvas.

“The brain gets a lot more stimulation, a lot more pleasure, out of brighter colors,” says psychotherapist Aimee Daramus, PsyD. “In fact, sometimes in therapy, bright colors can be used to help somebody who’s having trouble being in the moment.” This technique is called chromotherapy (or color therapy), which can be helpful in treating anxiety and depression.

Even though I just used eyeliner instead of light therapy, I still felt the benefits of adding color to my everyday life.

How (and why) wearing colorful eyeliner helps boost my mood and confidence

1. It lets me explore my artistry

I can’t draw, paint, or sketch to save my life, so I always thought I wasn’t artistic. Once I started to do different looks with my vibrant liners, though, I started to see and appreciate my artistic side. Where I would go out bare-faced before, I now try to match my makeup with my outfit—which I did for a couple of launch parties, Mother’s Day, and my cousin’s wedding.

2. It’s a big payoff for not so much work

I like to spend my time running, dancing, hiking, at the beach, and with my family and friends. Frankly, I don’t love spending time getting ready. For that reason, I keep my skin-care, hair-care, and makeup routines super basic—like, I don’t wear any makeup most days. However, because the liner usually just takes me one stroke of the brush, I found a perfect mood-boosting beauty hack, even when there was nothing else on my face. I timed myself for the Cleopatra-esque look below (which I did in my jammies, by the way), and it took just about three minutes.

3. People always compliment it

People can’t stop telling me how cute my colorful eyeliner is—my roommate loves it, my mom loves it, my sister loves it, my uncle loves it… pretty much everyone loves it. And, honestly, as a Leo sun, I live for the applause.

The compliments are also fertile grounds for connecting with other people, which is something I love to do when I get the chance. Even if I’m not feeling up to approaching someone, chances are I can get them to approach me if I’m wearing super-artistic eyeliner.

The colorful eyeliners I tried and the ones that makeup artists love

NYX, Vivid Brights — $9.00

Even though I’m not a makeup girlie, I am well aware of NYX’s reputation as a long-lasting, affordable drugstore brand, so I was excited to try these when my roomie and I selected four shades to play with. We got white, lilac, light pink, and dark pink, but the line comes in nine colors. The pigmentation of these liquid liners is honestly unmatched.

My one complaint about this colorful eyeliner is that it can peel off if you don’t put a couple of layers on at the start. That said, if you apply two coats, you’ll see your vibrant reflection in the mirror and smile just like I did.

Haus Labs, Optic Intensity Eco Eyeliner — $22.00

Though I didn’t try this one myself, I am pretty comfortable saying that this colored eyeliner is a heavy hitter. I’m not usually a huge fan of celebrity beauty brands, but Lady Gaga definitely delivers here. More than 1,500 reviewers have given this liner 4.5 stars and say that this liner “stays put and the pigment is incredible.”

I geeked out a little over the innovative design, too. Most eyeliner pencils on this list just come in a regular tube, but this Haus Labs pick has a smudge brush at the bottom. It’s available in 18 shades, which you can get in matte or a shimmery finish, and contains vitamin E oil and argan oil to help support your lashes.

About-Face, Fluid Eye Paint — $16.00

Both Hilario and Troszak give rave reviews to Halsey’s About-Face Fluid Eye Paint. Hilario says these little babies are “really pigmented and great quality. Some liquid liners tend to look cracky and dry, but these were smooth.” That’s even more impressive once you consider that this formula has a matte finish.

About-Face’s eye paint also brings all the colors of the rainbow to life, considering it has more than 30 shades available. You can opt for pink, blue, green, purple—seriously, any color you can dream up. For me, application with this was kind of tricky because the brush is relatively thick. If I want a thinner liner, I’ll likely have to buy a brush to help with that.

Sheglam, Color Crush Liquid Eyeliner-Insta-Gratification — $3.00

If you’re a fan of Shein, allow us to introduce you to their makeup brand: Sheglam. At only $3, Shein’s colorful eyeliner is the most affordable on this roundup. I didn’t test this, but I have other Sheglam products and formed some opinions based on that. For instance, while the makeup offers lovely pigmentation, it won’t last you all day or night. I’d say, at best, it’ll last you four hours. According to the brand, this liner is sweatproof and smudge-proof, but my experience with other SheGlam products tells me that might not be the case.

If you opt for this liquid eyeliner, you’ll have six shades to choose from: dark green, bright red, sky blue, pink, light purple, and yellow. Regardless of which color you get, though, you’ll receive a matte finish.

Makeup Forever, Artist Color Pencil — $22.00

If Makeup Forever had a fan club, Joshua Hilario, a New York- and New Jersey-based makeup artist, would be its President. “I have fallen in love with the Makeup Forever Artist Color pencils,” says Hilario. “These pencils are the most versatile and user-friendly pencils I have ever worked with. They glide easily on the waterline; you don’t have to work it on or rub aggressively to get the payoff you want.”

Hilario adds that there are 19 shades, and you can create graphic looks with this the same way you can manifest a smokey eye. I will say, however, that there don’t appear to be bright colors—think yellow and lime green—on this list, likely because the formula serves double duty as a lip pencil. That said, there are some pretty gorgeous pinks and reds in the line that will make for a great pop of color on your lids.

LA Girl Glide, Gel Eyeliner Pencil — $5.00

“This is the best affordable gel eyeliner pencil for the waterline,” says Troszak. “Bring on the warm summer nights, festivals, and smudge-proof eyeliner. I’m here for it.” I didn’t test this one myself either (since I’m but one person on usually tight deadlines), but I’ll take Troszak’s word for it. “They’re good and cheap,” she says. And reviewers agree.

Out of more than 60 reviews, 57 people have awarded this product five stars. One user says, “The formula goes on super smooth, no tugging on my hag eyes, and it stayed put all night! No smudging, no breaking up, no disappearing on my oily eyelid.” While this pencil may look like it twists to deliver more product, note that it needs to be sharpened.

19/99, Precision Colour Pencil — $26.00

I’ve always been a liquid liner stan for formulas that go on top of my lids. I find that they’re easier to apply and more pigmented, so I usually don’t even bother with colored pencils. However, the Precision Colour Pencil from 19/99 earned its place on my colorful eyeliners roster.

Not only is it super pigmented, but it also glides on easily and you don’t have to keep applying it for it to show up on your skin. Like the NYX Vivid Brights, this pencil is available in nine shades. Unlike the NYX product, though, those shades are primarily reds, pinks, oranges, and two blues. So if you want to create a rainbow look, you’d be better off shopping elsewhere.

Ilia’s New Brow Pencil and Gel Makes My Blonde Eyebrows Look Professionally Tinted and Laminated https://www.wellandgood.com/ilia-brow/ Tue, 30 May 2023 15:04:29 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1069701 I’ve got light, dirty-blonde eyebrows and have spent years in search of products that will make them look full and sculpted without requiring a massive chunk of time to get the job done (I may be a beauty writer, but even I don’t have a half an hour every morning to draw on my brows). So when I recently came across ILIA Beauty’s latest launches—theIn-Full Micro-Tip Brow Pencil ($24) and In Frame Brow Gel ($24), both of which came out today and claim to be the “most natural-looking, clean brow pencil on the market”—I knew I had to put them to the test.

Ilia is known for its skin-friendly, multipurpose formulas (the brand’s blush-highlighter-lipstick hybrid and tinted SPF serum are among our editor’s favorites), and I was excited to see how the new brow products stacked up. At $24 a pop, the price tags are certainly steeper than what I’d typically spend to sculpt my eyebrows, but after trying them, I’ve got to admit they’re worth it. Let’s just say I won’t be using any other brow pencil (or gel) for the foreseeable future. Keep scrolling to find out why.

In-Full Micro-Tip Brow Pencil

ILIA, In Full Micro-Tip Eyebrow Pencil — $24.00

Shades: blonde, dark blonde, taupe, soft brown, auburn, auburn brown, dark brown, and soft black.
Claims: vegan, cruelty-free, fragrance-free, silicone-free.
Ingredients: mineral-based pigments infused with vitamin B5 that condition and nourish hair.

Thanks to an ultra-fine tip and artfully-crafted blend of pigments, powders, and wax, this pencil is pretty much foolproof—it’s so easy to use that even the most beginner-level brow artist will be able to achieve an easy (and fast!) natural look.

For my own brows, I opted to try the blonde and dark blonde pencils to match my natural shade. I started by drawing thin, hair-like strokes on my brows, and I was impressed with how easy the application was from start to finish. The dual-tip brush was super-fine which gave the illusion of actual hair, and it was easy to apply just the right amount of pressure for the intensity of the pigment I wanted.

In Frame Brow Gel

ILIA, In Frame Clear Eyebrow Gel — $24.00

Shades: clear
Claims:
Ingredients: hydrolized quinoa, hair renewal complex

After applying the pencil, I put on a layer of the In Frame Brow Gel on top to hold the hairs in place and lock in the color. The brow gel boasts a clear and lightweight formula that gently swipes across the brows.

Made with hydrolyzed quinoa and a hair renewal complex, this brow gel conditions and strengthens brow hairs while creating the illusion of fuller brows. As someone with relatively thin brow hairs, I appreciated the full look the gel gave them and liked that it was nourishing my natural brows in the long term while giving them some instant oomph. I used two layers of product to get my brows shaped and placed in the position I wanted them to be in for the day.

Final Thoughts

In terms of longevity, the brand claims that the pencil would provide all-day coverage and that the gel would last eight hours, and the products stood up to the test. After a long day in the Florida sun, my eyebrows were still completely filled. The tips were a little thin and straggly, but that’s likely because I rubbed the edges of my brows a few times throughout the day.

My only less-than-perfect feedback on the products is related to their pricing. Even though clean formulas are more expensive,  $24 for a brow gel and pencil feels like a lot. That said, the products stay on all day, so you won’t have to waste any with reapplication, but it’s still something to keep in mind.

Even so, I’ve already put my former eyebrow products away and will be keeping these in my makeup bag for the foreseeable future.

11 Hypoallergenic Makeup Must-Haves Formulated With Sensitive-Skin Types in Mind https://www.wellandgood.com/best-hypoallergenic-makeup/ Sat, 06 May 2023 18:00:44 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1051017 Thanks to a recent surge in sensitive-skin friendly skin-care products, finding gentler alternatives to traditionally harsh products like retinols and chemical peels is easier than ever. But finding hypoallergenic makeup that doesn’t cause a flare up? That’s a different story. Even though they offer fabulous results, many popular products on the market still feature ingredients that can trigger rashes, itchiness, and irritation. There are exciting options for people with skin allergies—you just have to know what to look for.

What is hypoallergenic makeup?

Finding hypoallergenic makeup is complicated because the term “hypoallergenic” isn’t exactly regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As we’ve learned, anything can be a potential allergen or irritant, so it’s hard to say something is 100 percent hypoallergenic when every single person’s skin is different and unique. Generally, though, hypoallergenic makeup, like mascara, foundation, and blush, is made with less ingredients that commonly cause irritations. Macrene Alexiades, MD, PhD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Macrene Actives, explains that “hypo” means “less than normal,” so in reference to makeup and skincare, hypoallergenic alludes to products that (through less ingredients) are less likely to trigger an allergic reaction. Popular irritants include fragrances, alcohol, dyes, and more.

When shopping for this type of makeup, looking at the label is your best bet. Doctors like Dr. Alexiades have some general green and red flags to look for when you do.

What to look for in makeup if you have allergies

It doesn’t need explaining that if you have a specific allergy, steer clear of those specific allergens in the makeup itself. From there, Dr. Alexiades explains that if you experience any sensitivity to makeup, seek out options have been tested by the pros, like dermatologists and ophthalmologists. “If you have sensitive skin, look for mineral-based makeup as well as formulas that state they’ve gone through rigorous allergy testing,” she adds.

Some products also have a seal to shoppers know it’s been vetted by professionals and made without common irritants, like the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance and the SkinSafe Seal, which was developed in partnership with MayoClinic.

What to avoid in makeup if you have allergies

If you have a skin condition like eczema or hyper-sensitive skin in general, NYC-based dermatologist, Angela Lamb, MD, says to avoid all makeup that contains fragrance (both synthetic and natural), parabens, or formaldehydes.

Parabens are preservatives that manufacturers add to products to extend their shelf life, but they commonly cause skin reactions,” Dr. Lamb explains. To tell if a product contains preservatives, check ingredient lists for benzyl alcohol, propylparaben, diazolidinyl urea, and butylparabyn. And to really double down on irritating allergies, Dr. Alexiades adds that avoiding mica, retinol, alpha hydroxy acids, and essential oils can help, too.

Met Gala Tickets May Cost $50K, but Some of the Best Beauty Products on the Red Carpet Were Under $30 https://www.wellandgood.com/met-gala-2023-beauty-under-30/ Tue, 02 May 2023 16:51:17 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1056891 By now, you’re probably up to your eyeballs in Met Gala photos and memes (Jared Leto! Doja Cat! Lil’ Nas!), daydreaming of what it would be like to wear a couture gown and stroll the red carpet at *the* event of the year.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but unless you have a cool $50,000 to spare (and get invited—good luck), you’re probably going to spend the first Monday of next May swooning over the looks and costumes from your couch like the rest of us. Fortunately, you don’t have to be a millionaire to recreate your favorite Met Gala looks at home. Much of the makeup used to create the pearly complexions and Choupette-approved cat eyes on your favorite celebs were achieved using products for $30 or less. Like Rihanna’s dramatic lashes which, of course, were courtesy of Fenty Beauty mascara that’s only $24. Or Kendall Jenner’s purr-fect winged eyeliner, which is just $9 on Amazon. Celebs! They’re just like us!

Attending next year’s Met Gala is probably a long shot, but getting A-list approved glam isn’t. Scroll to shop the best skin and makeup products on this year’s red carpet, all for $30 or less.

Fenty Beauty, Hella Thicc Volumizing Mascara — $24.00

The Queen of Met Gala herself showed up wearing the coolest (and honestly, comfiest-looking) cape we have ever seen, with lash-laden cateye sunglasses on, to boot. Underneath those shades, however, her own lashes were curled using none other than her own Hella Thicc Volumizing Mascara, which is just $24 a bottle. The tapered brush and volume-boosting formula lift and twirl lashes for a dramatic effect. Maybe not as dramatic as the falsies on the cateyes, but dramatic nonetheless.

Lancôme, Teint Idole All Over Full Coverage Concealer — $29.00

We don’t know what’s more stunning: Mindy Kaling’s structural, pearly gown, or her lit-from-within complexion. Her makeup artist, Eva Kim, achieved the dewy look using Lancôme products, including this hydrating, lightweight concealer that’s just under $30. “The Met Gala is all about the dress and my approach is to make sure the makeup and dress compliment each other,” Kim says, in a press release. “The glam should be subtle and shouldn’t distract from the gown and full look. For that reason, I went for a classic, romantic look that was fresh and dewy but still has an edge. I executed this look using some of my favorites from Lancôme. It all felt very fresh and feminine.”

Kendall Jenner

L'oreal Paris, Infallible Grip Precision Felt Waterproof Eyeliner — $9.00

Shades: 5

What’s more impressive than Kendall Jenner’s cheeky body suit? The fact that her makeup was done using entirely L’Oreal products.“The inspiration for Kendall’s makeup was pulled from Mod 70’s makeup with an emphasis on the eyes,” makeup artist, Mary Phillips, says in a release. “Bold lashes to compliment the upper and lower lash lines with a classic winged liner.” That winged liner happens to be just $9 on Amazon and, true to its name, is infallible. Stock up while you can.

Miranda Kerr

Ilia, Liquid Powder Eye Shadow Tint — $25.00

We think Ericka Verrett, the artist behind Miranda Kerr’s romantic hair and makeup, absolutely nailed her Met Gala style, which was inspired by the, “high-glamour girls of 90s Chanel runway shows.” As for her makeup, Verrett used everything Ilia, including brand’s signature Skin Tint and Multi-Stick. As for her sparkly eyes, that was courtesy of the Liquid Powder Eye Shadow Tint in “Mythic”. This cream-to-powder eyeshadow dries in the prettiest finish and literally doesn’t move. For just $25, you’ll want to buy one in every shade.

Kim Kardashian

Makeup By Mario, MoistureGlow Plumping Lip Color — $24.00

Leave it to Kim Kardashian to one-up her Marilyn Monroe dress from Met Gala ’22 with a somehow even more luxurious look. For makeup as glamorous as her gown, Kardashian turned to the iconic celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, who used his own Makeup By Mario products on everything including her cheeks, eyes, and lips. This includes the brand’s newest MoistureGlow Plumping Lip Color, a shiny, plumping gloss that hydrates and “plumps” while it’s on. Steal Kardashian’s pout and blend “Soft Nude” and “Hot Pink”, or snag one of the 11 other colors for an A-list look of your own.

Serena Williams

Beautyblender, Bounce Always On Radiant Skin Tint — $29.00

Pearls and pearly complexions—that’s what this night was all about. Serena Williams made her baby-bump debut wearing both, the latter of which, according to makeup artist Farzana Zaman, was achieved using complexion products by Beautyblender. After prepping the skin with the brand’s new Boost 18-Hour Firming & Smoothing Primer ($29), Zaman used a few drops of this Radiant Skin Tint in “Deep 3” for natural-looking coverage, before warming it up with bronzer and highlighter. (All blended with the iconic makeup sponge, of course.)

Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Jessica Chastain, Kate Moss—Charlotte Tilbury was a popular choice for A-listers last night. While the brand’s fan-favorite contour wands will set you back a cool $42 each (if you can get them, that is), this lip liner, which was used to create Moss’s nude lips, is only $25. Its waterproof, matte formula ensures no smudging and goes on smoothly, defining lips and keeping lipstick in place while it’s on. Moss wore the dusty “Iconic Rose” at the Met Gala, but there are 17 total shades worth exploring.

I Tried This $7 ‘Breakup Proof’ Mascara on a Sweaty, Tear-Filled Run, and It Didn’t Budge https://www.wellandgood.com/wet-n-wild-breakup-proof-mascara/ Mon, 17 Apr 2023 21:00:12 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1050437 After years of shutting my short-lashed eyes and praying at the altar of formulas that promised to extend them, I’d finally given up. No matter how many mascaras and serums I tried, I simply couldn’t find one that delivered on its promise of helping me fake the look of falsies and stayed on all night… so it didn’t really feel worth it to deal with the hassle of morning-after raccoon rings. I became a proud no-eye-makeup girl (yes, even with a full face beat), and felt stress-free knowing my lashes couldn’t fail at what they didn’t try. But then, I was convinced to give one last product one last shot.

Enter: Wet n’ Wild’s Breakup-Proof Mascara ($7), which promises to be “waterproof, smudge-proof, cry-proof, and fade-proof” and last up to 16 hours without smearing, smudging, or flaking—no small feat for any mascara, let alone one with a $7 price tag.

First impressions

Unlike other mascaras in my arsenal, this product plumped my lashes without making them feel hard or heavy. This is likely because of the castor oil (which, in addition to being nourishing, also stimulates lash growth), vitamin E (which offers conditioning benefits), and vegetable collagen in the formula, which according to the brand “will make your lashes look softer and plumper than they ever have before.”

The wand’s big, fluffy brush also contributes to the formula’s barely-there feeling. It coats each individual lash with just enough product to make it look like I have eyelashes, but not so much that they felt cakey or like excessive movement would cause flakes. Since I often gravitate towards plastic wands that have a bit more weight to them and really glob the product on, I was surprised to like this more bristly brush and the subtle, but still noticeable, length and volume. Another Amazon reviewer agreed, saying, “I especially like the application brush…it does help my lashes look more noticeable and they look like natural lashes!”

Did it give me the full Tweety Bird effect that I’ve gotten from alternatives? No. But my lashes felt so light and soft that I forgot I was wearing mascara, which is a major selling point in itself.

Staying power

Being chronically single, I had to get a little creative to test the true “breakup proof-ness” of this mascara. So, as a hopeless romantic runner with a degree in storytelling, “creative” is what I got and I took to the West Side Highway—a waterfront path that many New Yorkers refer to as “West Side Hinge” thanks to its notoriously beautiful (and eligible!) frequenters—to see how the mascara would stand up on an extra-sweaty run.

During my first mile, I made eye contact with a sweaty stranger, then spent the entirety of miles two through six concocting a narrative in my head about how we met, fell in love, and built a beautiful life together (all while listening to Taylor Swift so that I could really get into my feels). By the time I hit mile 7, though, I brought myself back to reality with a reminder that this figment of my imagination never really loved me in the first place (… or knew my name), which left me shedding a few sweaty tears over “Tall HOKA man” on the walk home.

… We went through a breakup. He was just on a need-to-know basis about it.

When I got back to my apartment and looked in the mirror, I fully expected to see smears and smudges reminiscent of Jenny Humphrey’s goth-girl phase on Gossip Girl—especially considering that it’s spring and I’d been rubbing my allergy-attacked eyes with reckless abandon. To my surprise, though, my mascara had remained fully intact.

I was shocked, but am not alone in singing the formula’s staying-power praises. One Amazon reviewer said, “It is def waterproof! I put it to the test. It didn’t budge!…Def a good mascara for the price and great for those days you might be sweating or crying.” I had just done both.

Removability

After my elation at the mascara’s staying power had passed, I was confronted with a new concern: If this stuff survived 8 miles of sweating, crying, rubbing, and fantasizing, will it ever come off?

Waterproof mascaras typically use wax to create a protective seal around each lash, which prevents moisture from getting in and keeps your look from smudging. However, this makes them (understandably) difficult to remove, which is why I’ve traditionally been hesitant to use waterproof formulas on my own barely-there lashes.

Despite not coming off when dry rubbing my eyes while running, though, removing the Breakup Proof Mascara didn’t require much elbow grease when I got home. I used the Solvasa Cleansing Butter ($42), my fingers, and a good rinse with the Baebody Collagen Micellar Face Cleanser ($16), and that was all it took. When I showered that evening, I did find a little bit more come off under my eyes, but that is pretty standard for my makeup removal process.

Final thoughts

All said, this mascara does just as it promises for a very wallet-friendly price tag: It survived a “breakup” (in my head, at least) without giving me something else to cry about. It isn’t necessarily what I would turn to for a full “could blow out candles with a blink” look, but the big, bushy, brush is uniquely effective in achieving a more natural day-to-day look and the formula really does stand up to just about anything.

Unlike the exes you’re breaking up with, this mascara will last, keep its promises, and is low-maintenance enough to want to keep around for a long while. “Forever” material, indeed.

Want To Make Your Hot Girl Walks Even More Effective? This Beauty Founder Says To Double Them as Skin Treatment Sessions https://www.wellandgood.com/shari-siadat-self-acceptance/ Thu, 13 Apr 2023 20:45:08 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1048523 Growing up in a Persian household, TooD Beauty founder Sharareh Siadat was taught never to leave the house without a full face of makeup. “You never walk out barefaced— you always look put together because how you look is family honor on the streets, and people will talk about you if you don’t look good, and that was so ingrained in me by my family,” she says. “I took the roots of that messaging, but made it my own, and moved away from the parts that don’t serve me. I’m very happy to go out of the house without makeup on—I’m not afraid of that—but the essence there is to be proud and honor who you are and respect yourself and your body.”

It may feel odd to hear the woman who created the clean beauty world’s first biodegradable glitter and electric blue mascara touting the benefits of going out barefaced, but to Siadat, beauty is about caring for and expressing yourself—whatever that means to you.

When the two of us sat down to record the latest episode of Well+Good’s beauty podcast, Routine Rundown (new episodes every Monday and Thursday!), I expected our conversation to focus on her products and the work she was doing to make makeup feel more inclusive for all. What happened instead, though, was that she gave me a masterclass in loving yourself that felt a whole lot more like a therapy session than a professional interview.

Listen to it here:

In elementary school, Siadat was bullied for the way she looked—particularly in regard to her unibrow (a physical trait that we share, and that I was also tortured about in elementary school)—which shaped her relationship to beauty for much of her adult life.

“I really hated who I was and how I looked, and I did everything to conform to  Eurocentric forms of beauty—waxing, lasering, tweezing, highlighting, crazy diets—and I ended up allowing that need for whiteness and Eurocentricity to really control certain aspects of me,” says Siadat. “Then, my youngest daughter came out as a spitting image of me, and she was so dope, so effervescent, and so connected to herself, and I realized I didn’t feel the same way about myself…so I decided to grow my unibrow back at 37 years old and face a face that I hadn’t seen for 24 years. And that was the beginning—it wasn’t the destination of me accepting myself, but it was a door that opened.”

One of the ways Siadat embraces her spirit is through her morning routine, which starts between 4 and 6 a.m. every day. “I wake up very early, because I need to feel like I’m ahead of the world—my life is crazy and I need a second before I start hearing, ‘Mom, I want pancakes,'” she says. “And I share that, because beauty starts with a connection to self.”

Aside from using this time to meditate, chug water, and drink coffee, Siadat uses her free a.m. hours to take herself on a nature walk—which she doubles as a way to connect to herself through beauty. “Before I go on my walk, I’ll spritz myself with rose water, and there are three or four types of facial oils that I’ll mix and match so that it almost feels like a restorative skin-care treatment as I go through nature,” she says, explaining that she turns to products that stimulate her senses just as much as they nourish her skin.

Shop Siadat’s pre-walk routine below (don’t forget to top it off with SPF!), and listen to the rest of our (so-inspiring-it-made-me-cry conversation) conversation on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Supernal Cosmic Glow Oil — $108.00

This naturally-derived oil is packed with a slew of good-for-skin ingredients like vitamin C, omega fatty acids, and blue tansy, and thanks to a blend of chamomile and amla, “smells like the most amazing fairy forest,” says Siadat.

Aesop, Damascan Rose Facial Treatment — $85.00

This rose-and-neroli facial oil is like a tall drink of vitamin-infused water for dry skin. It’s got vitamins E and A to hydrate and brighten skin, and “if you really like the smell of natural rose, it’s amazing,” says Siadat.

RANAVAT, Radiant Rani- Saffron Brightening Dark Spot Treatment — $135.00

“This brightening saffron serum reminds me of my Persian heritage—I love the way it smells,” says Siadat of this dark-spot fading formula. It heroes saffron, turmeric, and licorice root to make skin look even and radiant.

Shiva Rose, Rose Face Oil — $120.00

There are so many skin-loving oils in this formula (jojoba, rosehip seed, argan, and sea buckthorn, to name a few), which are mixed in what the brand calls a “high vibrational environment” to create a formula your senses (and skin) will cherish. “It’s so organic—she uses the highest gradation of essential oils, so I love putting this on too,” says Siadat.

These Quick and Easy ‘Dopamine Beauty’ Looks Will Boost Your Mood in Under 30 Seconds https://www.wellandgood.com/dopamine-beauty/ Wed, 12 Apr 2023 02:00:45 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1047635 Fun fact: Adding a quick—yet bold—pop of color to your makeup can totally boost your mood.

“Dopamine beauty,” an off-shoot of the “dopamine dressing” trend that emerged in the wake of 2020’s lockdown, purports that adding something fun into your look (like bright hues or a little glitter), can boost your levels of dopamine, AKA the “feel good” chemical in your brain.

“The concept really has been buzzing in the fashion world, so I love the idea of applying it to beauty,” says Neil Scibelli,  a celebrity makeup artist in New York City. “We can apply these products quickly to our skin to get that instant boost that will give us that hit of dopamine, which essentially are the chemicals that raise our happiness levels. Dopamine beauty plays into the psychology of color and how wearing certain colors can evoke positive emotions.”

To dabble in dopamine beauty, you don’t need to have Euphoria-level makeup skills. Scibelli says quick and simple tricks like orange lipstick, baby blue eyeliner, or bubble gum pink blush can give you that boost. The key is using colors you love.

“Traditionally, color trends had steady seasonal cadence dictated by the influence of designers—for example, jewel tones around the holidays and pastels in the spring,” says color designer and researcher Kel Jackson. “But for the last 10-plus years, we’ve seen consumers casting off these cyclical color trends in favor of expressive color driven by individuality.”

If you want to create quick and easy, yet impactful, dopamine beauty looks, follow Scibelli’s tips and recommendations below.

Eyes

Eye looks don’t have to be complicated to be bold. Opt for colored liner, mascara, or liquid eyeshadow to get a pop in in under 30 seconds.

Urban Decay, 24/7 Glide-On Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil — $25.00

“Blue, turquoise, and green are the highest up on the dopamine color chart and are scientifically proven to give off the dopamine effect,” says Scibelli. “It’s really easy to wear turquoise makeup like a really fun, quick turquoise eyeliner. So many brands make them, but just automatically think of Urban Decay 24/7.” He loves the shade LSD, a  navy shimmer with bright turquoise micro-sparkle, but it also comes in 32 additional shades in a range of finishes.

Stila, Stay All Day Muted-Neon Liquid Eye Liner — $25.00

If you prefer a liquid formula, try the brand’s new muted neon shades, which come in six gorgeous pastel shades. “Stila was one of my first-ever favorite liquid liners ever,” says Scibelli. “Even when I first started doing makeup years ago, Stila was known for its traditional black liquid liner.” So these bright new shades are sure to please.

TooD toodscara blue mood — $24.00

“Colorful mascara is like a statement feature in itself,” says Scibelli. “Even wanna keep the lid nude or neutral or even nothing and you’re running out of the house, colorful mascara for summer is a really fun and easy way to get that pop.” This blue mascara from TooD is perfect. It’s got a skinny wand which makes it easier to coat each individual lash in blue.

Kosas 10-Second Eye Gel Watercolor Eyeshadow — $15.00

“Metallic in general has been trending again, so if you’re thinking about doing colors on the eyes, you can wear metallic variations,” says Scibelli. He loves a rose gold liquid eyeshadow, like this one from Kosas. “Those are great for someone who likes a no-brush, all-over lid. Those are easy to use when someone’s like, ‘Ugh, I’m the worst with liner. I just need to throw something on and go.'”

Thrive Causemetics, Infinity Waterproof Eyeshadow Stick — $26.00

If you want eye shadow with a little more precision, opt for a shadow stick like these ones from Thrive Causmetics. They’re a pencil that comes in 11 shades, some shimmery some matte. Use it for an all-over lid look or as eyeliner.

Kulfi, Zari Eyes Eyeshadow — $30.00

Our senior beauty editor, Zoë Weiner, swears by Kufi’s new cream eyeshadow pots for her own mood-boosting beauty looks. “I never, ever thought I’d wear electric green or blue on my eyes—I’m more of a bronzey-gold girl—but these formulas have completely change my mind,” she says. “You can apply them with your fingers for a subtle-yet-impactful swath of color, which is what I tend to do, but if you want something more intense, they’re super buildable.” She likes to apply the green to the inner corners of her eyes (along with the bronze and rose gold on her lids) to really make them pop.

Half Magic, Glitterpill Eye Paint — $20.00

If going full glitter glam feels like a bit much, consider using this liquid liner (from Euphoria’s own Donni Davy!) to add just a hint of sparkle to your look. It’s equipped with an itty-bitty brush that allows for precise application across your lid, and stays in place no matter where your day (or night) may take you.

Cheeks

Cheeks are hands down the easiest way to try dopamine beauty. Get a bit heavy-handed with your go-to colors or try a flush of a punchier shade.

Milk Makeup Lip + Cheek Cream Blush Stick — $24.00

“A bubblegum pink pop of blush on the cheek can give that really fun hit of dopamine,” says Scibelli. “And pink in itself is also responsible for creativity and calm.” He loves these sticks from Milk. It comes in Rally, this pretty shimmery mauve, plus10 other shades.

Glossier Cloud Paint

Scibelli also loves Glossier Cloud Paint, which comes in eight super-pretty, sheer-and-buildable shades. It’s a gel-cream formula that has blurring powder pigments to provide a soft, diffused, and seamless finish.

Nudestix Nudies Matte Cream Blush
Nudestix Nudies Matte Cream Blush — $35.00

If you want a matte color on the cheek, reach for these sticks from Nudestix that have a gorgeous cream finish. It’s available in 10 shades including Moodie Blu, this stunning purple.

Lips

Your options are endless when it comes to dopamine lip looks. You can go for a standard lipstick to get an opaque finish or play with sheer formulas that still provide amazing color pay-off without being as intense.

Keys Soulcare - Comforting Tinted Lip Balm - Manifestation (43029)
Keys Soulcare Comforting Tinted Lip Balm — $18.00

“Orange and yellow represent positivity and success and an amazing orange lip is like a great quick fix,” says Scibelli. This one from Keys Soulcare in the shade Manifestation, a sheer bright coral, is perfect.

Live Tinted Huelip Liquid Lip Crème — $22.00

If you want a fun lippie with a more opaque color, grab one of these cream lipsticks from Live Tinted. It comes in 10 pretty shades and is infused with lip-living ingredients like hyaluronic acid and jojoba oil to provide a never-drying, lightweight finish.

Neutrogena, Moisturesmooth Color Stick — $13.00

Scibelli loves these crayons from Neutrogena. “They’re made with fruit extract and shea butter so it gives a dose of moisture with your color and it’s buildable.”

Nails

“One really fun way to try dopamine beauty is with colorful nails,” says Scibelli. “You’re getting that hint of happiness as you’re looking at your hands typing throughout the work day or as you’re sending that text.”

Orly Sweet Retreat — $55.00

“Colorful nails, like rainbow nails, are trending, so each nail is a different color,” says Scibelli. You can achieve this look with this kit that includes six new shades from Orly. They’re also part of the brand’s breathable line, meaning they provide long-lasting color in one step, with no base coat or top coat needed.

Chillhouse Chill Tips Split the Bill — $16.00

If you want fun nails without the work, try press-ons. Brands like Chillhouse make super pretty and chic options, like this set that features split red and purple tips.

Après Nail Bright Fiesta — $70.00

If you prefer gel, Après Nail has so many fun colors to choose from. This set called Bright Fiesta features five vibrant shades that you’re gonna reach for all summer long.

This Vitamin C-Packed Concealer-Eye-Cream Hybrid Brightens Blemishes and Dark Circles in a Single Swipe https://www.wellandgood.com/olehenriksen-vitamin-cc-eye-stick/ Sat, 08 Apr 2023 22:00:44 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1045671 As someone whose life perpetually runs 15 minutes behind schedule (yes, I am the girl who texts “I’m on the way!!!” when I’m still dripping wet in a towel), I need a.m. skin-care products that will get me out the door as fast as humanly possible. That means looking for formulas that are mess-free (because I can’t risk spilling on my clothes and having to figure out an outfit), easy to apply, and ideally serve double duty. The latest addition to my morning routine—Olehenriksen Banana Bright+ Vitamin CC Eye Stick  ($34)—checks all of these boxes and then some.

I’m in my 30s, so basic skin-care knowledge (and a whole bunch of internet memes) tell me that I need to be using a daily eye cream. But for all of the reasons listed above, I… don’t usually do that. Who has time to mess around with another skin-care product when you’re already late for a work breakfast? Not me. That’s why I was so excited to discover this skin-care makeup hybrid, which is part vitamin C serum, part concealer, and everything I need to look ready to go even when I feel anything but.

First things first, the formula

Olehenriksen’s Banana Bright line (which includes a facial primer, a traditional eye cream, a sunscreen, and a serum) has long been beloved for its next-level brightening properties. Each of the products are jam-packed with ascorbic acid, the most potent form of vitamin C, which works to perk up skin both immediately and over time. To take that instant luminosity to the next level, the formulas also include light-reflecting mineral pigments inspired by banana powder.

For those looking to perk up their under eyes (#itme, especially first thing in the morning), vitamin C is an A+ pick. “While many eye creams traditionally focus on hyaluronic acid to moisturize and plump, or retinoids to help with protein and fine lines and wrinkles, vitamin C is great because it is going to help to brighten the under-eye skin,” board-certified dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, previously told Well+Good. “It’s an area where we often deal with hyperpigmentation, and so what that basically means is that there’s the brown discoloration that sometimes contributes to dark circles.”

Plus, because vitamin C is a potent antioxidant, it defends against free radical damage—one of the main culprits behind visible signs of skin aging like fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration. So not only will it help reduce the appearance of these things if you’ve already got ’em, but it will also help prevent more from showing up in the future.

My hot take on this hybrid under-eye brightener

While there are plenty of great vitamin C eye creams on the market, this one’s quickly become my favorite thanks to the fact that it’s basically a serum and concealer in one. It’s got a solid stick delivery system (so application literally involves a single swipe), and blends seamlessly into the skin. I know it’s technically meant exclusively for the under-eye area, but given how easy it is to use and the hefty coverage it delivers, I’ve found myself dotting it on dark spots all over my face. Vitamin C can help here, too, thanks to its discoloration-fading abilities.

The stick comes in three flexible shades, and I use the lightest (“Banana”) on my olive-toned skin. Your best bet is to opt for something slightly lighter than your complexion to really amp up that instant brightness.

Lashes Are The One Beauty Expense Americans Won’t Cut Back On—Here Are Some Budget-Friendly, At-Home Options That’ll Save You Time and Money https://www.wellandgood.com/affordable-at-home-lash/ Fri, 17 Mar 2023 20:00:06 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1033815 As interest rates climb and the United States sits on the edge of a recession, people are cutting back on unnecessary expenses where they can. But for those who love beauty, looking good is feeling good. So some habits are hard to break. And a recent survey of 1,011 people by beauty and wellness platform StyleSeat found that while Americans are willing to cut back on makeup purchases and nail salon visits, they’re holding on to their lashes for as long as they can swing it.

“When your bank account is running low, there are things you have to do without,” reads a post about the StyleSeat survey on the company’s site. “Our survey revealed the beauty items and services people would cut back on first if finances were tight. The last item people would cut back on? Lashes.”

Whether you’re heading into a salon every few weeks for a lash lift and tint, popping on lash strips every day, or testing your DIY skills with at-home lash extensions, lash lovers are holding on strong. And it makes sense—lashes add life to your eyes and having them done can help you look more polished even on no-makeup days.

It aligns with the Lipstick Effect—an observation made by economist Juliet Schor, PhD, in her 1998 book The Overspent American. She found during times of financial hardship, women were more likely to splurge on luxe lipsticks that onlookers may notice them applying in public rather than the expensive skin care or eye makeup that they apply at home. While no one is putting on their lashes at dinner, lashes have become a status symbol in their own right with the rise of lash products and services that literally give you that I-woke-up-like-this beauty boost. As people flutter their lashes around town, they know their eyes are commanding attention and are ready to recommend their lash person to anyone who asks.

If you’re a lash lift girlie and still have it in your budget to head in for your appointments go forth (and remember that under no circumstances should your EVER DIY a lash lift). But if you’re ready to cut back while still looking fab, shop a few of our budget-friendly lash products that you can use at home for doll-like lashes.

They’re soft, super fluffy, and have the 3D fullness effect you’d be hard-pressed to find outside of a higher-end lash brand.”

Tubing Mascaras Are Your Secret Weapon For Long, Voluminous, Smudge-Free Lashes, so I Tested 11 of Them To Find the Best of the Best https://www.wellandgood.com/best-tubing-mascaras/ Fri, 17 Feb 2023 18:00:00 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1021179 One thing about me is I can’t leave home without a swipe of mascara. No matter the situation, mascara is the magic wand (no pun intended) that instantly makes me feel put together. And if I’m in a rush to get out the door, I’ll sooner skip styling my hair before I skip mascara. It’s simply a non-negotiable for me. That being said, I treat mascaras like Pokémon—I need to catch (or try) them all. But of all the formulas I’ve put on my lashes—long-wearing, volumizing, and even a few top-sellers—finding one that visibly lengthens and thickens without smudging remained a tall order for me—until I heard about tubing mascaras.

What is a tubing mascara?

Instead of coating your lashes in waxes and oils like a traditional mascara, a tubing mascara uses polymers to wrap, or create “tubes” around your individual lashes for an enhanced, lengthened effect that doesn’t budge, smudge, or flake. And unlike waterproof mascaras that are long-wearing but a total pain to remove, “tubing mascara is easily removed by splashing warm water over your lashes and gently pulling and loosening the tubes off,” explains professional makeup artist Lisa Aharon. The warm water softens the polymers around each lash, so once you (gently) massage your lids, they’ll slide off in tiny little tube pieces. And if you’ve ever shuddered at the sight of fallen eyelashes on your cotton pad, a tubing mascara’s easy-to-remove polymers will help keep your precious lashes intact.

How to apply a tubing mascara

When it comes to application, less is usually more with a tubing mascara, according to Aharon. “Personally, I find a light application to work best,” she says. “Wiggling one to two coats from root to end will usually suffice as tubing mascara has great hold!” Because tubing mascaras offer superior hold compared to non-tubing formulas, which means if you’re a habitual lash curler like myself, you can count on tubing mascaras to hold stubborn lashes in place.

As great as tubing mascaras sound, telling them apart from traditional formulas can get tricky— not every tubing mascara will be explicitly dubbed as such (though tubing formulas are becoming more popular). There are, however, two clear giveaways that’ll help clue you in. Most will have a “water resistant” claim vs. waterproof, and will include something along the lines of “removes easily with warm water” in the description.

To spare you the detective work, I tried and tested tubing 11 tubing mascaras and landed on my top 9 that are worth trying.

l'oreal telescopic lift mascara on the left, author photo on the right holding and wearing the tubing mascara
L'Oreal Paris, Telescopic Lift Washable Mascara — $12.00

Originally $15, now $12

The mascara at the center of #LashGate, the Telescopic Lift Mascara has an innovative, double-hooked wand that’s designed to lift lashes at the root and load them up with product on one side, then comb and separate each lash for a defined, lengthened look on the other. With a little application practice and patience, I found that the Telescopic Lift lived up to its lifting, lengthening, and volumizing promises, and actually held up throughout the day without smudging. Because the wand can be a bit finicky, though, I’ll probably reach for other mascaras on this list when I’m rushing out the door in the morning.

Pros

  • Lifts, lengthens, and volumizes
  • Doesn’t smudge or flake
  • Safe for sensitive eyes
  • Ophthalmologist tested
  • Easy to remove

Cons

  • Unique wand takes getting used to
  • Formula might be too wet for some
  • Can get clumpy

#8

L.A. Girl Plush Lash tubing mascara on the left, and author holding and wearing the mascara on the right
L.A. Girl, Plush Lash Mascara — $7.00

True to its name, L.A. Girl’s Plush Lash Mascara delivers full, pillow-soft lashes with absolutely zero crunchiness. The volumizing formula can be easily built up without getting clumpy, giving me the freedom to pump up the volume if I’m in the mood. The precise but well bristled wand managed to catch hold of every single one of my lashes too, giving them some much needed lift and fullness. What’s more, it didn’t flake off like other tubing mascaras I’ve tried—and only came off when I wanted it too, with a little warm water. And for less than $10 bucks? Plush Lash proves you needn’t overpay for a good tubing mascara.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Can be layered without clumping
  • Doesn’t make lashes feel crunchy
  • Adds natural looking volume
  • Easy to remove
  • Doesn’t flake

Cons

  • Not very lengthening (on me)
  • Doesn’t hold a curl as well

#7

clinique lash power lengthening mascara on the left, and author image on the right, wearing the tubing mascara and holding it
Clinique, Lash Power Mascara Long-Wearing Formula — $23.00

Despite being around since the early 2000s, the Clinique Lash Power Mascara is a criminally underrated tubing mascara. It gives my lashes a natural looking length and definition that lasts, which is exactly what I want on no-makeup makeup days. And the small, precise brush makes application a breeze—allowing me to get up close and personal with every lash. Removing it is easy too, all you need is a little warm water. Just one thing to note: if you prefer a dramatic lash look, Lash Power isn’t it. It’s a true, “my lashes, but better” mascara!

Pros

  • Lengthens and defines lashes
  • Precise brush catches every lash
  • Easy to remove
  • Doesn’t smudge or flake

Cons

  • Might be too subtle for some

caliray tubing mascara on the left and author image on the right holding and wearing the mascara
Caliray, Come Hell or High Water Volumizing Tubing Mascara — $24.00

If volume is what you’re after—you’re definitely going to get it with Caliray’s Come Hell or High Water Mascara. Equipped with a “teddy bear bristle” wand, the tubing mascara adds serious length and thickness to my lashes. It has a wet, creamy texture that’s infused with argan oil for extra nourishment—but can get clumpy with too many coats, so less is definitely more with this one. Most importantly though, it lives up to its long wearing claims. I can even wear it on my bottom lashes without any flakes or smudging.

Pros

  • Volumizes and lengthens lashes
  • Enriched with lash conditioning argan oil
  • Natural bristles coat every lash
  • Doesn’t smudge or flake

Cons

  • Can get clumpy with too many coats

#5

Merit clean lash tubing mascara on the left, and author image holding and wearing the mascara on the right
Merit, Clean Lash Mascara — $26.00

Merit’s Clean Lash Mascara does it all. It lengthens lashes, it’s buildable without getting clumpy, and it contains lash-conditioning ingredients like nourishing fatty acids and olive oil esters. The fluffy applicator catches and defines every lash for a full and fluttery look. The only issue is—it’s almost too hard to remove. I’ll carefully massage my lashes with warm water (and my face wash in some cases) and will almost always have some remnants left behind. On the flip side, though, the tubing mascara truly is budge-proof—which means I’ll continue reaching for it for long nights out or big events.

Pros

  • Lengthens lashes
  • Buildable without getting clumpy
  • Contains lash conditioning ingredients
  • Fluffy bristled wand defines every lash
  • Doesn’t smudge or flake

Cons

  • Hard to remove

#4

tower 28 tubing mascara on the left, the author on the right holding and wearing the mascara
Tower28 Beauty, Make Waves Lengthening + Volumizing Mascara — $20.00

The Tower28 Mascara quite literally made waves in the beauty community when it launched in 2019, and now I understand why. The curved synthetic wand is composed of 3 flexible bands to ensure that no lash gets left behind, no matter your lash type. I also loved that the curved wand gave my lashes some much needed curling help—a savior for rushed mornings when I don’t have the time to fuss with a lash curler. The buildable formula gave me a separated, lengthened lash look that still served plenty of volume (a rare feat in a tubing formula). What’s more, it managed to stay put throughout the day, even when applied on my lower lashes.

Pros

  • Safe for sensitive eyes and contact wearers
  • Ophthalmologist tested
  • Lengthens and volumizes lashes
  • Doesn’t flake or smudge
  • Easy to remove

Cons

  • Formula dries out quickly

#3

victoria beckham beauty future lash tubing mascara on the left, and image of the author on the right holding and wearing the tubing mascara
Victoria Beckham Beauty, Future Lash Mascara — $30.00

A high-end lash serum and tubing mascara in one, ultra-sleek tube, Future Lash is full of lash boosting ingredients like nourishing shea butter, hydrating panthenol, and niacinamide to combat breakage. Plant-derived polymers wrap around every lash, adding natural looking length and volume, while the curved wand helps enhance my lash curl with every swipe. This is a mascara I can layer without fear of spidery, clumpy lashes. The fluttery lash look it provides lasts all day without flaking, and it comes off just as easily as it goes on, with the help of warm water. The only downside is that the fancy feel and ingredients—sadly—come at a fancy price.

Pros

  • Contains lash boosting ingredients
  • Curved wand helps enhance your curl
  • Lengthens and thickens lashes
  • Doesn’t flake or smudge
  • Easy to remove

Cons

  • Pricey

#2

tartelette tubing mascara on the left, image of the author on the right, wearing and holding the tubing mascara
Tarte, Tartelette Tubing Mascara — $25.00

I’ve been a longtime fan of Tarte mascaras, so needless to say I had high hopes for the brand’s first-ever tubing formula—and thankfully, it delivered. The Tartelette Mascara features a tapered, synthetic wand that’s covered in bristles (269, to be exact) that seamlessly coat every lash for sky high length. It can be layered on for a more dramatic effect without clumping, and I can typically achieve the long, fluttery look I want with no more than 2 or 3 swipes. And while I didn’t put the Tartelette Tubing Mascara to the 24-hour wear test, I can say that it held up all day without smudging or flaking (even when applied to my lower lashes). Another bonus? It’s infused with strengthening castor oil and conditioning shea butter to support longer, stronger lashes.

Pros

  • Lengthens and defines lashes
  • Tapered wand catches every lash
  • Doesn’t flake or smudge (even on bottom lashes)
  • Can be layered for more drama without clumping
  • Enriched with conditioning castor oil and shea butter

Cons

  • None! :)

thrive causemetics liquid lash extensions tubing mascara on the left, and image of the author wearing the mascara and holding it on the right
Thrive Causemetics, Liquid Lash Extensions™ Mascara — $25.00

Arguably the mascara that put tubing formulas on the map, Thrive Causemetic’s award-winning Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara is undoubtedly worth the hype. While I don’t think I fooled anyone into thinking I got lash extensions, the tubing mascara added substantial length to my lashes, and the tapered wand delivered on definition without getting spidery. For a peak lengthening effect, I wiggled the mascara on from root to tip—and even after hours upon hours of wear, I noticed that Liquid Lash Extensions helped my stubborn lashes maintain their curl without transferring or flaking as the day wore on. What’s more, it contains a conditioning blend of castor oil, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin B5 to support stronger, healthier looking lashes. It comes in brown and blue shades too!

Pros

  • Lengthens and defines lashes
  • Safe for sensitive eyes / contact wearers
  • Ophthalmologist and dermatologist tested
  • Enriched with conditioning and strengthening ingredients
  • Doesn’t smudge or flake (even on bottom lashes)
  • Easy to remove

‘I’m a Celebrity Makeup Artist, and These 4 Drugstore Mascaras Outperform Their Luxury Counterparts’ https://www.wellandgood.com/favorite-drugstore-mascaras/ Mon, 13 Feb 2023 17:00:30 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1018419 When it comes to mascara, Emily Amick, a celebrity makeup artist in New York City, is a drugstore girl through and through. “I’m not a big luxury mascara person,” she says. And while she’s tried many high-end mascaras, none of them are better than her trusty drugstore staples.

“The formulas are all pretty much the same,” says Amick. “You can find a mascara that’s just good at a drugstore as you can get from Dior or wherever. I’m not a big believer in any major claims a mascara makes—like it’s gotta do what it does. I have a lot of higher-end ones, but it’s because they’re sent to me in PR packages. If I run out and I’m spending money on mascara, I’m going to the drugstore.”

The biggest difference comes down to your desired effect—do you want length or volume? Waterproof or regular? All the options you need can be found at your local drugstore and you won’t spend a dime over $15.

“I am perfectly happy with a drugstore mascara,” says Amick. “I use them on myself often and I use them on clients all the time and I never have any complaints.”

Shop her four favorite drugstore mascaras below.

A celebrity MUA’s 4 favorite drugstore mascaras

L'Oréal Lash Paradise — $13.00

“I’m a huge fan of the L’Oréal Lash Paradise,” says Amick. “If I’m running low on mascara, I will run to a drugstore and grab that and I know I’ll be set like for any client. It really is just as good as anything I found.” It’s designed to provide both volume and length and comes in four colors—black, black brown, blackest black, and mystic black.

Maybelline The Colossal Volum' Express — $10.00

“I’ve been using this mascara lately—and I hadn’t used it literally since high school, but Maybelline sent me it in a package and I’m impressed with it,” says Amick. “I stopped buying it when I was a teenager and then I was like ‘hmm, I’m just gonna use this.’ And I think it’s great. It has more of a wet formula, so if you want to take your time and build it to get the definition, it’s a little bit better than the dryer, volumizing formulas.” It comes in classic black and glam black.

L'Oréal Voluminous Original — $11.00

“I trust just about anything L’Oréal does when it comes to mascara. They’re really just as good [as luxury products],” says Amick. And this OG mascara from the brand is one of her go-to’s. It separates and builds every lash without bumping to provide great volume and it’s made with vitamin B5 and ceramides to protect and condition your lashes. Plus, it’s available in seven shades—blackest black, black, black brown, cobalt blue, deep burgundy, deep violet, and deep green.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara — $13.00

“I really like the Maybelline Sky High mascara,” says Amick. ” It’s more of a comb-through mascara meaning it’s really good for defining and lengthening. I’m really impressed with that one.” It’s formulated to create long, feather-light-looking lashes and comes in four shades—blackest black, cosmic black, true brown, and very black.

I Wear False Lashes on a Daily Basis, and These Are *Only* Bulk Options on Amazon I’ll Buy https://www.wellandgood.com/bulk-lashes-amazon/ Thu, 09 Feb 2023 16:00:24 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1006909 My name is Amelia, and I’m a lash-a-holic. Ever since I learned how to properly apply them in college years ago, I’ve been donning them on an almost daily basis. False lashes are like the cherry on top of an indulgent sundae; the ice cream is delicious on its own, but you definitely notice something’s missing. Much like a signature scent or handbag, hitting the town without them just feels wrong.

I’ve purchased falsies from every vendor imaginable: hole-in-the-wall beauty supply stores, drug stores, grocery stores, cosmetics shops like Sephora, you name it. As such, I’ve learned what makes a great pair. IYKYK: the shape, length, curl, and band size can totally make or break an intricate eye makeup look.

My favorite bulk lashes on Amazon

Suffice to say I consider myself to be a certified lash-snob at this point. Despite my high standards, my go-to lashes aren’t expensive or sold exclusively at makeup stores; they’re sold in bulk packs on Amazon for less than $10. Apart from the occasional festive set for a holiday or costume party, I haven’t strayed from these two styles for the last three years.

Favorite wispy: Wiwoseo Natural Faux Mink Lashes, 10-Pack

Side-by-side comparison photo of Amelia McBride wearing false lashes.
Volume? Check.

Years ago, I solely wore the Ardell Double Up falsies. I had a very difficult time finding voluminous lashes that had enough curl to give me the doe-eyed look I was going for. These wispy bulk lashes from Wiwoseo deliver the fullness and curliness of the Double Up lashes for a fraction of the cost. For only $9, you get 10 pairs of reusable lashes, averaging to just $.90 a pop. They’re soft, super fluffy, and have the 3D fullness effect you’d be hard-pressed to find outside of a higher-end lash brand.

Favorite dramatic: Veleasha 5D Faux Mink Lashes, 7-Pack

Side-by-side photograph of Amelia McBride wearing false lashes.
Drama?! Check.

According to my Amazon order history, I’ve been regularly purchasing the ‘Dubai’ style of these Veleasha bulk lashes since 2019 (!). I love sporting long, dramatic lashes on a weekend night out, and this brand does not disappoint. The band is flexible, the lashes feel super soft, and despite the length, they feel much lighter than they look. For $9, you get seven pairs of lashes that look they’d cost an arm and a leg. With over 19,000 5-star reviews, it’s safe to say the Amazon girlies agree with me: these lashes are fabulous.

Favorite lash glue: Duo Non-Irritating Brush-On Lash Adhesive, 2-Pack

As for lash glue, you guessed it—I get that from Amazon, too. The skin around my eyes is particularly sensitive, so I have to avoid lash glues that contain latex or formaldehyde (ew!) The brand Duo sells a fast-drying adhesive specifically formulated for people with sensitive skin like myself. It’s latex- and formaldehyde-free and contains skin-protecting vitamins A, C, and E. It applies white, allowing you to see exactly where you’re applying adhesive to the lash, but dries completely clear. I personally like to keep an extra tube in my purse in case of a runaway lash corner, and this 2-pack allows me to keep one at home, too.

I Tried the Thickening ‘Wonderwand’ Mascara That Sells Every 2 Minutes—I Couldn’t Stop Getting Compliments on My Betty Boop Lashes https://www.wellandgood.com/ciate-london-wonderwand-mascara/ Wed, 08 Feb 2023 01:00:12 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1013727 Is there such a thing as too many mascaras? Probably—and my bathroom counter space agrees. But as someone who has short, thin lashes, I’ll take all the help I can get in the eye makeup department. This is what led me to Ciaté London Wonderwand Mascara ($22), my new go-to mascara that truly does it all: lengthen and volumize without the flaking or smudging. It’s no wonder a tube of this stuff sells every two minutes globally.

What makes Wonderwand so special? It’s really all about the brush shape and the formula. The brush is chunky and hourglass-shaped, which allows for more of the formulation to coat your lashes in one fell swoop—you’re getting a wider application, even with hard-to-reach lashes (like in the corners of your eye). It’s a puffier brush, but it’s still easy to use (sometimes bigger brushes like this can be messy and create smudges all around your under-eye or eyelid, but that’s the not the case here).

And the formula is a thickening one, which just means it adds volume to each individual lash. Most mascaras use polymer fibers to add volume, but this equates to flakiness. Wonderwand’s thickening agent comes from two types of (vegan) wax—carnauba wax (which comes from trees native to Brazil) and microcrystalline wax (which is derived from petroleum). Plus drying film formers. Tory Wilson, NPD Director at Ciaté London, explains, “Our Wonderwand Mascara is designed for flake-free lashes, allowing you to build up your volume with multiple layers. We achieve this with a formula that uses a blend of hydrating, volume-building waxes, coupled with fast-drying film formers. These lock in the lash shape and volume,” which ensures “the long-lasting wear you all know and love.”

The mascara shade itself is a jet black that doesn’t hold back on boldness, which is exactly what I need to make my eyes pop.

What happened when I tested Wonderwand

I’ve been testing Wonderwand for six months, now. I can confirm that it lasts all day long—in sunny late LA summer weather, and in 30-degree holiday temps in New York City. It has lasted through an Orangetheory workout and a Corepower Yoga class with minimal smudging (and I sweat a lot). And it’s even held up through some of the saddest Grey’s Anatomy episodes (Seasons 8,9, and 12—IYKYK), which is undeniably impressive.

Aside from its notable longevity, this mascara really does give you its all. Like I previously said, I need a lot of assistance when it comes to my lashes, and this stuff gives me fluttery, Betty Boop-esque eyes in a few applications. Want proof? Below is a photo of me wearing two swipes of Wonderwand, but only on my right eye.

That’s without primer or even a lash curler. Below is the full look (this also includes liquid eyeliner, which is Benefit They’re Real! Xtreme Precision liner, and eyeshadow). On this night, I went out for dinner in the rain and came home without a lash out of place. It’s the closest I’ve found to fake lashes—and my friends and family never fail to note how good my eye makeup looks. The friend I went out to dinner with that night even asked if I’d been using lengthening serum (I have not been).

The mascara has 4.8 stars on the Ciaté London website, which has pages and pages of raving reviews from other shoppers. “I’m in love with this product. In my mind, no other mascara exists anymore except this one,” one reviewer says. Another writes, “This is hands down the best mascara ever! Goes on smooth, doesn’t clump, and the best part is you can keep layering it for however much length and fullness you desire. I’ve had people ask me if I have eyelash extensions! (I don’t). I am in love!!!”

So, if you’re on the hunt for a mascara that’ll give you almost cartoonishly good lashes, snag the Wonderwand. Thank me later.

10 Do-It-All Mascaras Makeup Artists Swear Will Give Your Lashes Length and Volume in a Single Swipe https://www.wellandgood.com/best-mascara-volume-length/ Mon, 23 Jan 2023 20:00:34 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1009271 Once upon a time, I routinely got false lashes. Every few weeks, I’d book an appointment, head to the lash studio, and lay down for an hour while a technician tediously applied falsies to each of my lashes.

For a while, I loved it, and kept up the process for two years. But somewhere along the line, I started to dislike the look and feel of a false flutter. Sure, they looked great immediately out of the salon, but eventually, they’d grow out, fall out, or I’d anxiously pluck them off (bad, I know—don’t do it), and I’d be left with nonuniform lashes. Because of this, I ditched my extensions and now choose to fulfill my lash fantasies with well-formulated mascaras that give my short, straight lashes length and volume at the same time.

Didn’t think it was possible for a single mascara to do it all? According to celebrity makeup artists, it all comes down to the formula and how you apply it. Keep reading to learn more—and to discover 10 lengthening and volumizing mascaras that the pros applaud.

What to look for in a mascara that volumizes and lengthens without clumping

While it may seem like you need to choose between length and volume (especially if you want to avoid clumping), there are mascaras that do it all—you just have to know what to look for and how to use the product effectively.

“When looking for a mascara that is volumizing and lengthening, it’s really going to be about both the mascara formula and the brush applicator,” says celebrity makeup artist Robert Sesnek. “Choose formulas that are slightly creamy in texture as these tend to build beautifully and avoid formulas that are too wet or watery as these can weigh down the lashes and not build up as well.” Additionally, some lengthening and volumizing mascaras are formulated with fibers, which extend each lash and add fullness.

“I like all of my mascaras to be waterproof as well,” adds celebrity makeup artist Alexandra French. “I have really short lashes and only waterproof mascaras keep them curled and lifted,” which she says can lend to a fuller-looking flutter.

The shape of the brush also matters: In order for a mascara to be both volumizing and lengthening, it must have a densely-bristled wand that can grab lashes close at the root to coat them fully. “Mascara wands/brushes are almost as important [as the formula] because of how they lay and build the mascara up,” explains Sesnek.

In terms of clumping, “It can be caused by the brush part of the wand: If it collects too much product in certain spots, it will clump,” celebrity makeup artist Jamie Dorman previously told Well+Good. She revealed that over-pumping your wand in your tube—which many people do to gather more product on the bristles—can actually dry out the mascara. With that in mind, your best bet to avoid clumping is to only pump the wand into the tube a single time, and brush off any excess before applying so you don’t crowd your lashes with product.

Now that you know what to look for and how to properly apply your mascara, keep reading to discover 10 best mascaras for volume and length, according to celebrity MUAs.

The best mascara for volume and length

Tower 28 Beauty, Make Waves Lengthening + Volumizing Mascara — $20.00

French dubs this as the best do-it-all clean mascara. “It works like a waterproof mascara for me—It keeps lashes long, full, and lifted all day,” she exclaims. “The wand helps separate the lashes giving you the ‘your lashes but better’ effect.”

Pat McGrath, Fetish Eyes Lengthening Mascara — $32.00

“The Pat McGrath Fetish Eyes Lengthening Mascara is one of my favorites for building up lashes with major volume that almost have a false lash effect,” Sesnek says. “I love the intensity of this black mascara!”

MAC, Extended Play Gigablack Lash Mascara — $26.00

While technically described as a sweat- and humidity-resistant formula, the MAC Extended Play Gigablack Lash Mascara acts like a waterproof formula that maintains volume and length, as well as rich pigment. “It’s easy to remove and has a buildable formula,” says French. “There is no smudging or flaking with this one.”

YSL, Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara — $29.00

For major volume, notable length, and zero clumps, Sesnek can’t get enough of the YSL Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara. “It’s another favorite of mine as it never clumps and has major volume,” he says. “This is a great one for really building smaller and shorter lashes. It’s definitely worth the splurge!”

Rare Beauty, Perfect Strokes Universal Volumizing Mascara — $20.00

For a natural-looking flutter that’s still long and voluminous, French says the Rare Beauty Mascara works beautifully. “It separates lashes perfectly while adding lots of length to the tips,” she says, noting that it creates an allover lift and fullness in the process.

L’Oréal, Voluminous Carbon Black Volume Building Mascara — $11.00

Do-it-all mascaras don’t have to cost $20+. “A staple in my kit for as long as I can remember is the L’Oréal Voluminous Carbon Black Volume Building Mascara,” Sesnek reveals. “I can always count on this mascara to work on pretty much everyone. It’s one of the densest black mascaras I’ve found, and one of the most affordable, and I will use it as long as it’s made.”

Charlotte Tilbury, Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes Volumizing & Lengthening Mascara — $29.00

If your goal is to achieve volume and length, as well as definition, French suggests adding the Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Push Up Volumizing & Lengthening Mascara to your cart.

NARS, Climax Mascara — $25.00

“I love the NARS Climax Mascara for my sensitive-eyed clients,” Sesnek says. “No clumps on this one and incredibly buildable [for a] full lash effect. Usually, three coats and I’m good to go!”

MAC, MacStack Superstack Mascara — $28.00

For dramatic volume and length, French says the MACStack Mascara is a must. “This is a thicker formula which is amazing for volume and can give you the indie sleaze chunky lash look that I love so much,” she says.

Dior, Diorshow 24h Buildable Volume Mascara — $30.00

Pricier? Sure. Worth it? According to Sesnek: Absolutely. “The DiorShow Mascara is another classic and definitely one of my all-time favorites,” he reveals. “Several coats and you’ll look like you’re wearing false eyelashes but in the best way possible. This formula makes for the longest, fullest, and thickest lashes possible.” To achieve those results, though, he says it’s important to wipe any excess mascara off the wand before applying each coat (of which he recommends multiple for an optimal end look).

I Tested Over a Dozen Liquid Eyeliners, and This One From the Drugstore Has Them All Beat https://www.wellandgood.com/i-tried-dozen-liquid-eyeliners/ Sat, 07 Jan 2023 14:00:12 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=991235 If beauty history has taught us anything, it’s that makeup trends come and go, but winged liner is forever. Despite this, liquid eyeliner remains, in my opinion, one of the trickiest makeup products to master. I myself have been wearing winged liner off and on since I was in the seventh grade (humble brag), and I still hold my breath in anxiety every time I apply it. And sure, my questionable cat-eye technique could definitely take some of the blame, but the liquid eyeliners you’re using can really make or break the experience.

Kind of like finding a signature scent, choosing a liquid eyeliner is personal. Everyone’s needs are different—folks with hooded eyes may want a transfer-proof formula, for example, or those with oily lids may want a matte, waterproof finish. My liquid eyeliner criteria is pretty simple: I want my liner of choice to have a flexible tip that lends itself to a feline flick, and I want it to last all day without transferring to my lids. To find this mystical eyeliner of dreams, I put over a dozen high-end and drugstore liquid liners to the test.  Read on for my final ranking, and the one formula that came out on top.

#10

honest beauty liquid eyeliner on one side and alexa wearing the eyeliner on the other side
Honest Beauty, Liquid Eyeliner — $13.00

I must admit, the Honest Beauty Liquid Eyeliner took me by surprise—the formula is richly pigmented at first stroke, and delivers a bold matte finish. And while the ink well format does have a bit of a learning curve, keeps the felt tip saturated at all times. My only gripes are the fact that the formula takes a solid 20 seconds to dry down, and that it transferred a bit on my oily lids. But given the affordable price tag, it’s nothing a little primer or shadow can’t fix.

Pros

  • Inkwell doesn’t dry out
  • Pigmented formula
  • Matte finish
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Slight learning curve
  • Takes time to dry down
  • Transfers

#9

glossier pro tip liner on one side and an image of alexa wearing the eyeliner on the other
Glossier, Pro Tip — $18.00

The pioneers of easy no-makeup-makeup, I was expecting Glossier’s Pro Tip Liquid Liner to be as user-friendly as everything else in their lineup—and it is. The flexible brush gives you a precise line that’s perfect for a subtle cat-eye flick. The formula goes on semi-sheer which is a good thing for beginners who are nervous about going overboard with their liner, but might be a con for people who prefer a more bold, graphic look. The good news is that it’s buildable—it just takes a bit more time to get an opaque finish—and long wearing, with zero smudging or transfer.

Pros

  • Flexible brush tip
  • Long-wearing formula
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Great for minimal liner

Cons

  • Sheer formula
  • Dries out quickly, according to other reviewers

#8

kvd beauty tattoo liner on one side and alexa wearing the eyeliner on the other side
KVD Beauty, Tattoo Liner — $23.00

If you love winged eyeliner, then you’ve probably tried the KVD Beauty Tattoo Liner. It’s been a long time best-seller for good reason—the precise brush tip offers plenty of flexibility for bold and minimal feline flicks alike. And the easy-to-use pen actually lives up to its waterproof claims, making it oily-lid friendly (though if you want it to be extra budge proof, I recommend using a primer). The only caveat in my opinion is that it takes a couple of strokes to achieve full pigment—but the buildable formula makes layering easy, and never pulls up on itself or skips while applying.

Pros

  • Precise brush tip
  • Doesn’t dry out quickly
  • Waterproof formula
  • Can be used for subtle and graphic liner looks
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Needs to be built up for full pigment
  • May require primer for maximum staying power

#7

pat mcgrath liquid eyeliner on one side and alexa wearing the eyeliner on the other
Pat McGrath Labs, Perma Precision Liquid Eyeliner — $34.00

I love the bold matte finish on the Perma Precision Eyeliner by Pat McGrath Labs. Unlike other felt tip liners I’ve tried, the tip on this liner has some give to it, offering enough flexibility for a fluid cat eye flick. The pigmented, high coverage formula dries down quickly, but it did transfer a bit on my oily lids, so I’d recommend setting it with a powder or using a budge proof primer before applying to get the most out of its waterproof formula. Some Sephora shoppers also claimed that this one dried out quickly, but that hasn’t been my experience. Just store the liner upside down to keep the felt tip saturated.

Pros

  • Waterproof formula
  • Flexible felt tip
  • Bold color payoff
  • Matte finish

Cons

  • Reviewers say it dries out quickly
  • Might transfer on oily lids

#6

nyx epic ink eyeliner and alexa wearing the eyeliner on the other side
NYX, Epic Ink Liner — $8.00

Originally $10, now $8

This drugstore liner is said to be a more affordable dupe for the KVD Tattoo Liner…and I kind of agree. The Epic Ink Liner is just as user-friendly, has an equally precise brush tip, and a reliable waterproof formula that stays put. Dare I say that the pigment on this one is even more intense and high coverage than the KVD liner? One swipe does the trick with this one and I barely ever have to layer it. When the heat and humidity are at its peak here in Miami, I do use a primer with it as insurance.

Pros

  • Dries down quickly
  • Waterproof formula
  • Precise brush tip
  • Beginner friendly
  • Pigmented formula
  • Affordable

Pros

  • Requires a primer on hot and humid days
  • Brush tip frays if you’re not careful

#5

maybelline tattoo studio liquid liner on one side and a photo of alexa wearing the eyeliner on the other
Maybelline, Tattoo Studio Liquid Ink Eyeliner — $8.00

If you’re a winged liner aficionado, you’re going to want to snag this on your next trip to the drugstore. Maybelline’s Liquid Ink Eyeliner requires some practice to master the inkwell format, but once you get it, the long-wearing formula holds up. The applicator’s precise felt tip helped me achieve a sharp, clean line, and the pigmented black shade keeps its impact throughout the day without transferring. Plus, it’s under $10—which you can’t beat! Just note that if you’re partial to a matte finish, the Tattoo Studio Liquid Ink boasts a satin look.

Pros

  • Long-wearing formula
  • Hooded eye friendly, according to reviews
  • Doesn’t transfer
  • Inkwell format doesn’t dry out
  • Precise felt tip

Cons

  • Wouldn’t recommend for beginners
  • Comes off in flakes after day long wear

#4

ilia liquid eyeliner on one side and alexa wearing the eyeliner on the other
Ilia, Clean Line Liquid Eyeliner — $28.00

Ilia Clean Line Liquid Eyeliner promises an extra fine tip perfect for a precise liner look—and it totally delivers. It glides on effortlessly without skipping or tugging on my lids, and the formula is bold and pigmented with every stroke. And if you’re the type of person who likes to edit their feline flick with a cotton swab (I am), Ilia’s easy-to-remove formula makes touching up your liner easy—making this user-friendly pen a dream for beginners. The only con is that the formula might be a little too easy to remove, and requires a little help from a primer or powder to avoid transferring and smudging. I used Ilia’s skin-smoothing liquid eyeshadow as a base and that worked beautifully!

Pros

  • Ultra-fine felt tip
  • Pigmented formula
  • Matte finish
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Easy to remove

Cons

  • Transfers on oily lids
  • Needs a primer/powder

#3

rare beauty liquid eyeliner on one side and a photo of alexa wearing the liner on the other
Rare Beauty, Perfect Strokes Matte Liquid Liner — $19.00

Rare Beauty Perfect Strokes Matte Liquid Liner has over 1,000 vegan bristles in its flexible brush tip, making it easy to achieve a variety of liner looks—from bold graphics to precise, minimalist wings. The pen is also a bit taller than all of the other liquid eyeliners that I tried, which I found to make application even easier. What’s more, it packs serious pigment, giving me smooth and opaque matte ink that’s truly waterproof. And according to some Sephora shoppers, the budge-proof formula is great for folks with hooded lids too!

Pros

  • Waterproof formula
  • Flexible brush tip
  • Matte and pigmented formula
  • Smooth and easy to apply
  • Great for hooded lids, according to reviews

Cons

  • Might get too inky

#2

benefit roller liner image on one side and alexa wearing the liquid eyeliner on the other side
Benefit Cosmetics, Roller Liner Waterproof Eyeliner — $22.00

In all of my liquid eyeliner research, I was beginning to think I preferred brush tip eyeliners—until I tried the Benefit Roller Liner. The felt tip tapers to an extra fine point for extra precision that’s still super flexible, and it delivers smooth strokes of pigmented (truly matte) ink. While the Sephora reviews are varied, all I can say is that this formula was incredibly long lasting on me! With no smudging, bleeding, or transferring in sight. Plus if you want to take it for a test run before getting the full size, you can always buy a mini version.

Pros

  • Truly waterproof formula
  • Matte finish
  • Extra fine felt tip
  • Very pigmented

Cons

  • Dries too fast according to some reviews

#1

l'oreal infallible grip precision felt tip liquid liner on one side and an image of alexa wearing it on the other side
L’Oreal Paris, Infallible Grip Precision Felt Eyeliner — $9.00

Originally $12, now $9

Of all the liquid eyeliners on this list, this L’Oreal eyeliner ticks all of my boxes. I even used it on my wedding day—outside in the Miami humidity—which is really saying something. The fine felt tip delivers a razor sharp wing that’s *actually* waterproof, and lasts all day and night on me. It’s user-friendly, and perfect for drawing on subtle baby wings and artsy, graphic designs like. And after a solid three months of semi-consistent use (I did have to test the other liners on this list, natch), the liner pen has maintained all of its smooth, black pigment without getting dry and crusty. Plus, it’s so affordable!

Pros

  • Waterproof
  • Fine felt tip
  • Doesn’t transfer
  • Easy to use
  • Great for bold and subtle wings
  • Affordable

Cons

  • None (!!)

And the liquid eyeliners that weren’t for me…

Freck, Lashrocket Liquid Liner $24

I had high hopes for the Freck Lashrocket Liquid Liner the moment I read that it contains lash boosting peptides (who wouldn’t be game for a liner and lash serum in one?), but truth be told, it kind of fell flat for me. On the one hand, the inkwell liner format helps keep it from drying out like some liner pens are prone to do. But the applicator’s extra long handle is awkward to hold and the stiff felt tip makes it difficult to achieve that curved cat-eye look. The ink itself is on the sheer side, and went on a bit streaky the more I tried to build it up.

Benefit Cosmetics, They’re Real! Xtreme Precision Eye Liner $24

I’m a firm believer in Benefit’s budge-proof They’re Real Mascara formula, so I was psyched to see if the brand’s Xtreme Precision Eye Liner packed the same resilient punch. And while the fine brush tip was *extremely* precise and glided on without skipping or tugging, I’m bummed to report that despite its waterproof claims, the liner didn’t wear well on me and transferred within only a few hours. I also found the ink itself to be quite sheer, and required multiple layers to get the desired color payoff.

Well People, Fresh Lines Black Liquid Eyeliner $17

I was immediately intrigued by Well People’s Fresh Lines Liquid Eyeliner for its good-for-you formula—it contains aloe vera and rosemary to help hydrate and soothe eyes. The inkwell format keeps the liner’s felt tip wet with ink so you can get those nourishing ingredients right on your lash line. The only problem is, the formula stays wet once applied which led to lots of smudging. What’s more, the black ink doesn’t bring that intense pigment I crave in my liquid liners. You can layer it to build up the pigment of course, but that only made the wet formula more difficult to work with.

‘I’m a Movie Makeup Artist, and This Is the $29 Product I Use When Actors Have an Early Call Time and Need To Look Awake’ https://www.wellandgood.com/movie-makeup-artist-tips/ Sun, 01 Jan 2023 17:00:43 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=996457 Like morning news anchors, actors often start their days while the average person is still deep in their sleep cycles. This is due in part to the fact that they need to get through hair, makeup, and wardrobe before they even head to set. Given this, it’s understandable that not everyone that sits down in a makeup chair is bright-eyed and ready for their close-up, but that’s where people like Alisha Baijounas come in to work their magic with makeup artist tips to look more awake.

A MUA (makeup artist) for television and film, Baijounas knows a thing or two about faking a full night’s sleep. She’s currently the makeup department head on ABC’s Abbott Elementary season two, for which she’s typically ready to go in the makeup trailer by 5 a.m. to start working on its cast.

“Actors rarely show up fresh-faced,” she says. But Hollywood is practically built on the mantra: Fake it till you make it. And that same rule applies to looking well-rested in the wee hours of the morning. To accomplish this, there’s one product Baijounas swears by—and it only costs $29.

How this makeup artists helps her clients look more awake instantly

The product in question is Super Bounce Serum from Glossier, and applying it prior to makeup is her number-one makeup artist tip to look more awake. “Super Bounce uses hyaluronic acid to draw moisture to the skin, so it gives an instant hydration that’s perfect for awakening the face with a subtle glow,” Baijounas says.

To really make the product work its magic, she pairs it with an ice roller and Bolden AWAKE under-eye patches. “When you pair it with an ice roller, it brings out the natural contours of the face,” Baijounas says. “All of these products are great for everyone—all genders and ethnicities—and they do the trick every time.”

How to apply Super Bounce Serum for max effect

Baijounas uses a foundation brush to smooth the serum across her client’s face. “I apply Super Bounce with the same brush I do foundation with to sort of continue hydration through the foundation application process without adding more directly to the skin,” she says.

After, she adds the eye patches, then she pulls out her ice roller. “I use a two-prong ice roller over the top of the eye patches first to drain the under eye and sinus area working from the bridge of the nose outward to the top of the cheekbone/temple,” she says. Baijounas does five to eight reps per side before moving to the chin and jaw. Once this process is complete, she moves on to applying makeup. The results are better than coffee.

Our 10 top-selling makeup items in 2022

A black tube of mascara.
essence Lash Princess Waterproof Mascara — $5.00

Writer Dominique Michelle Astorino tested 20 of the top-rated mascaras and found that this one was one of the best. “It stood out even among the mascaras that were six times (or more!!) pricier,” she says. “As for the waterproof component, I tested this at an Elton John concert in which I knew I’d be crying, and it absolutely lasted all night. That said, I almost felt like I needed a chisel to remove at the end of that excursion.”

A pink tube of mascara.
Winky Lux Peeper Perfect Under-Eye Concealer — $16.00

This concealer went viral during the spring after TikTok user Abby Rivera (@abbythebadassmom) shared that it helped her conceal a skin condition called xanthelasma that leaves bag-like fat deposits under her eyes. “I have found the most perfect concealer,” Rivera shares in the one-minute video. “It is an amazing consistency, not too thick, not too thin. It has hyaluronic acid and collagen in it. I am literally obsessed. Obsessed.”

A gold tube of concealer.
Yves Saint Laurent Beauty Touche Éclat All-Over Brightening Concealer Pen — $38.00

To make your eyes appear more lifted, Sandy Linter, a celebrity makeup artist in her 70s, says to color in your brows, brushing them up, and apply a brow gel to keep them in place all day. Then, apply some highlighter—like the YSL’s Touché Éclat—which will brighten and lift your brows.

A white jar of a red lip mask.
Lawless Beauty Forget the Filler Overnight Lip-Plumping Mask — $21.00

If you want to make your lips appear fuller, this tinted mask is perfect. “The best lip plumper, in my opinion—which I use every morning and night and with every client—is the Lawless Lip Plumping Mask,” says Hailey Hoff, makeup artist to Hailee Steinfeld and Sofia Richie

A glass tube of concealer.
Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Radiant Concealer — $33.00

Celebrity makeup artist Denika Bedrossian used this product along with a slew of other Charlotte Tilbury faves to create an “effortless, romantic, and delicate” bridal look for actress Sarah Hyland. And when our senior beauty editor Zoë Weiner tested it, she loved it. “Because of its buildable coverage and ‘your skin but better’ finish, I can use it all over my face—I apply one layer under my eyes and two on top of any severe discoloration, then blend it out with a sponge,” says Weiner. “When I’m done, my skin looks so even that I don’t even need to bother with foundation. This stuff has pared my complexion routine down to a single step, and for that I am endlessly grateful.”

A gold tube of tinted moisturizer.
L'Oreal Paris Lumi Glotion — $16.00

Our editorial assistant Amelia McBride says this affordable “glotion” is the perfect dupe for the always-sold-out Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter. “Just like the Hollywood Flawless Filter, the Lumi Glotion can either be worn under your favorite foundation to add a boost of radiance or alone for maximum luminosity,” says McBride. “The Lumi Glotion has the same blurring, complexion-evening effects of the Flawless Filter with the added hydration benefits of glycerin and shea butter.”

A clear container of concealer.
NYX Professional Makeup Bare With Me Concealer Serum — $11.00

“The NYX Bare With Me Concealer is my favorite concealer at the drugstore,” says professional makeup artist Janelle Mariss in a TikTok video. “It goes so smooth under the eye, doesn’t crease, and it has a nice natural finish.”

Laura Geller Baked Balance-n-Brighten Color Correcting Foundation — $36.00

Powder foundation can be tricky for 40+ skin, because it’s naturally matte, and our skin gets drier as we age. So powder foundation can make the skin look even drier, which makes fine lines and wrinkles more obvious. But writer Jen Bramon found that this one worked wonders on her skin. “This foundation is a great option for anyone dealing with redness or discoloration,” says Bramon. “It has color-correcting swirls baked into its pigment, which help to even out blotchiness and dark spots. It’s a medium-coverage foundation, and I love that I don’t need to use a color-corrector with it to tame my redness.”

A black tube of mascara.
Chanel Inimitable Intense — $32.00

Astorino also loved this mascara—and has for over 15 years. “It’s got a solid lengthening-style brush with defining, comb-like bristles, and is buildable for many coats (though you likely won’t need more than, say, one and a half). The brush is also medium size, perhaps a bit on the smaller side, allowing for more control and precision,” she says. “This formula thickens, curls, lengthens, and defines, creating spectacular lashes that tread the line between false lashes and are-they-real natural. It lasts hours upon hours, with no fallout, no flaking, and no smudging.”

A silver tube of mascara.
Maybelline New York Lash Discovery Waterproof Mascara — $7.00

If you’ve got thin lashes, “I highly recommend a lightweight, non-whipped or creamy formula, something that dries fast, that’s also defining and volumizing,” says Isabel Y Rosado, a makeup artist in New York City. She loves using this mascara on lashes that already have length but need a little oomph.

The ‘I’m Cold’ Makeup Trend Is All About Rosy Cheeks and Frosty Lids—And You Can Nail It at Home for Under $30 https://www.wellandgood.com/im-cold-makeup/ Thu, 01 Dec 2022 02:00:22 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=981329

If you’ve spent any time on TikTok lately, you’ve likely encountered an “I’m cold” makeup tutorial on your feed (#Imcoldmakeup has over 85M views and counting!). Unlike the “clean girl” makeup look that came before it—which called for a radiant, minimal complexion—and the “siren eyes” trend which focused on a sultry, smoked-out cat eye, the “I’m cold” makeup aesthetic is all about flushed, win- chilled cheeks. Add in shimmer-dusted, “frosty” lids, rosy stained lips, and a matte complexion, and you’ll look like you’ve been frolicking in the snow.

When it comes to creating the viral winter makeup look for yourself, remember that more is more when it comes to blush application. “You want to focus the placement on the nose and below the under-eye area,” explains Carolina Banegas, a makeup artist based in Miami. “This will mimic the effect of snow-blistered cheeks.”

And contrary to the dewy look that’s had a firm grip on the beauty world for a while now, Banegas says going for a matte finish is the key to perfecting “I’m cold” makeup. “Skip the glow on the skin and opt for a perfectly matte, blurred base,” she explains. “Make sure to powder the skin with a translucent setting powder using a makeup puff so that skin is nice and blurred.”

To make feigning the frosty, cold girl makeup look easy, we tracked down the makeup essentials you’ll need to perfect the viral aesthetic at home. And if you want to try it without breaking the bank? The most affordable options will give you chilly glam for under $30.

Flushed pink cheeks

well people superpowder blush in guava twist on a white background for the i'm cold makeup look
Well People, Superpowder Blush Powder in Guava Twist — $20.00

This powdered blush has a cool pink hue perfect for recreating that flushed, cherub-cheeked look. The talc-free, semi-matte formula is marbled with a radiant shimmer that’s virtually undetectable on the skin but will give your cheeks just enough of a fresh, baby-pink glow. And even though it’s a powder, the hydrating formula never looks chalky and actually helps skin retain moisture—which couldn’t be more welcome in the winter months. For a flawless finish, I recommend using Well People’s Complexion Brush to apply it.

makeup by mario raspberry blush stick for the i'm cold makeup look on a white background
Makeup by Mario, Soft Pop Blush Stick in Raspberry — $28.00

Don’t let the hot pink shade scare you—Makeup by Mario’s raspberry-toned blush stick will leave you with just-pinched-looking cheeks in the best way. The creamy, pigmented formula glides on like an absolute dream without leaving behind a sticky residue, and it can be built up for added intensity or blended out with the soft brush on the other end for a sheerer look. Plus, compared to the other cream blushes I’ve tried, its staying power is unmatched. For the “I’m cold” look, apply it in a “W” motion across your cheeks and over the tip of your nose.

dior rosy glow blush compact on a white background for the i'm cold makeup look
Dior, Backstage Rosy Glow Blush — $39.00

An icon that’s totally worth the splurge, Dior’s Rosy Glow Blush aces the cold girl look. The secret is the “color reviver technology” that reacts to your skin’s moisture levels to create the most natural-looking bubblegum pink flush. The sheer formula makes it nearly impossible to go overboard, and yields healthy-looking, chilled cheeks every time without fail. “It’s the most beautiful, natural flush [of] pink,” wrote one Sephora shopper in a 5-star review. “And [it] lasts longer than any other blush I own.”

simihaze beauty solar tint cream blush duo on a white background
Simihaze Beauty, Solar Tint Cream Blush Duo in Dawn — $42.00

New to Sephora, Simihaze Beauty will draw you in with its unique, luxury packaging—but the nourishing formulas and pigmented shades will keep you coming back for more. The Solar Tint Cream Blush Duo in Dawn is a true soft pink, and it comes in both a matte and radiant formula. For the “I’m cold” look, dip into the matte side, and add a pinch of the dewier finish to the apples of your cheeks for a windswept natural flush. Plus, the petite compact is an easy add to your purse or tote bag for touch-ups on the go.

Wet n Wild Color Icon Blush — $3.00

In the compact, “Pink Me Pink” looks like the perfect rosy shade—and when applied to your cheeks, it won’t disappoint. Dust on a light layer for a soft-focus effect that’s sure to convince people you just came in form the slopes.

Frosted + sparkly lids

elf liquid eyeshadow in disco queen on a white background
E.l.f., Liquid Glitter Eyeshadow in Disco Queen — $6.00

To achieve that icy effect that’s essential to the “I’m cold” makeup look, opt for an opalescent glittery shadow like E.l.f. ‘s Disco Queen. The quick-drying gel eyeshadow contains a spectrum of rainbow hues in its silver glitters, turning your eyelids into a winter wonderland. The doe foot applicator makes it a breeze to apply, giving you the freedom to dab some on and sheer it out for a soft wash of sparkle, or build it up for an opaque, glitter moment.

nyx liquid eyeshadow in come thru coconut for the i'm cold makeup look on a white background
NYX, Ultimate Glow Shots Vitamin C Infused Liquid Eyeshadow — $11.00

This one and done eyeshadow has a shimmery finish that turns up the glow wherever you need it. For the “I’m cold” look, swipe it across your lids for an ethereal wash of silver, dot it on your inner corners, under your brow bone, or even dab it on the tops of your cheek bones for an effortless, snow-like glimmer. You can even use it as a base for powder eyeshadows for more glam looks!

urban decay moondust eyeshadow in cosmic on a white background
Urban Decay, 24/7 Moondust Eyeshadow in Cosmic — $22.00

Urban Decay’s Moondust Eyeshadow in Cosmic is packed with super-fine silver and champagne-hued glitters that catch the light to create a gorgeous, shimmering effect that touts serious staying power (we’re talking 16 hours!). For a more intense “I’m cold” effect, pack on the velvety soft shadow with your fingertip, or swipe it on with an eyeshadow brush for a more diffused, “frosted” look.

makeup by mario crystal reflector on a white background
Makeup by Mario, Master Crystal Reflector — $26.00

With its translucent shimmer finish, the Master Crystal Reflector can be applied virtually anywhere on the face for a sheer veil of ultra-fine sparkle. It’s perfect for swiping across the eyelids and concentrating on the inner corners to achieve that doe-eyed, “I’m cold” makeup look, that also makes you look wide awake (which I certainly could use more of during the winter time). It also functions as a beautiful eyeshadow topper, adding extra dimension and sparkle to matte shadows.

Rosy lips

benefit benetint lip and cheek tint for the i'm cold makeup look on a white background
Benefit, Benetint Liquid Lip Blush & Cheek Tint — $18.00

Benefit’s best-selling Benetint lip stain is well-loved on TikTok—which explains why it was sold out everywhere earlier this year. It also happens to be the key to just-bitten, “I’m cold” lips. The watery tint looks good on basically everyone, delivering a natural rosy stain that doesn’t budge throughout the day, and can also be applied to the cheeks for a natural cold girl flush. We’re big fans of the non-drying, light-as-air formula, and the fact that it can be effortlessly layered for a more intense look.

fenty beauty poutsicle lip stain in mai type on a white background for the i'm cold makeup look
Fenty Beauty, Poutsicle Hydrating Lip Stain in Mai Type — $24.00

Fenty Beauty’s hydrating lip tint reached viral status on TikTok this summer for the popsicle stain look it gives lips, and seeing as it’s also a great “I’m cold” lip option—there’s really no reason it shouldn’t be in your makeup bag. The conditioning formula goes on glossy and leaves a natural tint behind as it wears throughout the day. I’ve seen TikTok users apply it and blot away the gloss to achieve the perfect pink stain, but you can also leave it on as is for a more juicy, hydrated look.

covergirl clean fresh lip balm in cherry for the i'm cold makeup look on a white background
Covergirl, Clean Fresh Tinted Lip Balm in Cherry-Ish You — $4.00

In addition to coating lips in a beautiful, sheer wash of pinky-red color, Cover Girl’s Tinted Lip Balm delivers lasting moisture and hydration to dry, chapped lips. The nourishing vegan formula uses shea and mango seed butters, along with apricot kernel oil and hyaluronic acid to leave your lips feeling pillowy soft and nourished without feeling sticky or heavy. What’s more, we love that it can be built up for a more pigmented finish. It’s the “I’m cold” lip that also saves your pout from the drying effects of the cold.

Matte skin

laura mercier translucent setting powder on a white background
Laura Mercier, Ultra-Blur Talc-Free Translucent Loose Setting Powder — $44.00

Laura Mercier’s OG Translucent Setting Powder has been beloved by makeup lovers for years—and their new talc-free version that launched this year is even better, if you can imagine it. In addition to having makeup artists’ seal of approval, the mattifying loose powder is infused with hydrating hyaluronic acid, for even more comfortable wear that never looks cakey, and keeps excess oiliness at bay. Apply it with the matching powder puff for a truly blurred “I’m cold” makeup look that’ll hold up all day long.

fenty eaze drop skin tint on a white background
Fenty Beauty, Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint — $32.00

Fenty Beauty’s Eaze Drop Skin Tint has a natural, soft matte finish that makes the ideal base for the “I’m cold” makeup look. It delivers buildable, light to medium coverage and feels totally weightless on the skin, instantly blurring the look of pores, so skin looks smoother and more even in tone. What’s more, it applies effortlessly with only your fingers—which we wholeheartedly appreciate. And it comes in 25 flexible shades!

revlon colorstay foundation bottle on a white background
Revlon, ColorStay Light Cover Liquid Foundation — $15.00

Revlon’s ColorStay Light Cover Liquid Foundation delivers the lightweight feel of a skin tint, with the medium to high coverage of a foundation. The natural finish is devoid of any dewiness, making it a winner for the “I’m cold” makeup look, and the fluid formula goes on like a dream—just shake it up, and apply with your hands, a brush, or a makeup sponge for an even, flawless finish that’ll last as long as 12 hours (!!). Plus, it has SPF 35, which is not too shabby for a foundation (though we still think you should wear SPF under your makeup—yes, even in the wintertime).

I Tested the 20 Top-Selling Mascaras in the World—These Are the 10 Best https://www.wellandgood.com/top-rated-tested-mascaras/ Mon, 10 Oct 2022 14:33:35 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=844917 There are seemingly thousands of mascara options on the market, and take it from me—after a while, it’s hard to discern between them. It feels like every day I scroll through TikTok, am blown away by someone’s gorgeous lashes, then find myself sprinting to the nearest Sephora or drugstore to snag yet another tube.

And the thing is, there are a lot of similarities with the best of the best. The fan-favorite mascaras have a lot of crossover, but everyone’s got a different preference for a different reason, whether you’re picky about your brush and application process (guilty), or have a specific lash type with specific needs.

As such, I’ve spent the past month putting a ton of them to the test—my eyelashes and I have seen some sh*t these past weeks, and I’m down to my last drops of Avène micellar water. I rounded up 20 of the best-selling, most-popular, best-loved mascaras on the market to put them to the test. The criteria for this list included top reviews and ratings from various beauty retailers, popular beauty writer and editor picks, beauty chat forums, and internal W+G shopping data. And because I know my lashes are different from your lashes, I had a couple friends (and my 60-year-old mom) try them too, so we could compare notes.

At the end of it all, we landed on a top 10 for you to choose from. You likely won’t go wrong with any mascara on this list—they offer incredible length, volume, curl, definition, and longevity. In fact, they were all so fantastic, it was incredibly difficult to put them in any kind of order, but we did our best. Try any and all of them, and see what makes your lashes pop, as well as what gives you that confidence boost with just a couple swipes.

#10

essence
Essence Lash Princess Waterproof False Lash Effect — $5.00

$5, 5-star mascara is hard to beat on paper. And yes, this ultimate bargain find offered enough to hang with the best of ‘em on this list of all-stars. We got to review all five iterations of Essence’s Lash Princess collection, including Volume, Curl & Volume, Sculpted Volume, False Lash Effect, and False Lash Effect Waterproof. And while admittedly, this collection wasn’t for everyone, there was a MAJOR standout by a longshot (and one that surprised us all): the Waterproof False Lash Effect. Yes, the waterproof formulation delivered an even better statement lash than the water soluble formula.

Not only was it the least clumpy and smoothest application of the entire collection, but it stood out even among the mascaras that were six times (or more!!) pricier. We’re talking perfect definition and separation, the right amount of volume before it gets clumpy or spidery, and length.

As for the waterproof component, I tested this at an Elton John concert in which I knew I’d be crying, and it absolutely lasted all night. That said, I almost felt like I needed a chisel to remove at the end of that excursion… but that’s pretty typical for a waterproof, right? If you have any aquatic plans this spring or summer, don’t hesitate to drop a few extra bucks on this one; it costs less than an iced brown sugar shaken espresso at Starbucks.

#9

too faced
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara — $27.00

For feathery, soft Bambi lashes, Too Faced’s iconic BTS mascara is exactly what you need. Though you can build up to a bolder more statement lash, this formulation and fluffy brush provided the most natural result with just one coat. It also made it look like I upped my lash count—as if I had even more lashes after a couple swipes.

This mascara has been a fan favorite for nearly a decade. And because you can build to a more dramatic, thick, bold lash look with another coat (or two), BTS is really versatile in its application; you can wear it as part of an everyday, natural makeup look, or add some drama for added glam. I had a couple friends try this too, and it received praise across the board. The only con was longevity; some of my guinea pigs reported that there was loss of length and fallout after a few hours.

#8

kosas
Kosas The Big Clean Mascara — $26.00

True to its name (like Monsieur Big), this hit from Kosas really does deliver big lashes. And major props to the formula for actually strengthening lashes while you wear it. Part mascara, part lash conditioner, it uses ingredients like castor oil, vitamin B5, and biotinoyl tripeptide-1 to help with lash growth. I admittedly haven’t used this product long enough to notice lash growth benefits, so this review is primarily focusing on the mascara side of things.

The Big Clean is definitely a volumizer—you’re getting a decidedly bold lash look, especially with more than one coat. The formula is a bit heavier than the others, so you’ll likely need a lash curler to keep them from sticking straight out (my lashes struggled with this); my assumption is this is due to the serum and nourishing ingredients. Overall, the end result is truly gorgeous.

#7

lash paradise
L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Makeup Lash Paradise Mascara — $10.00

How could we not test out the leading mascara formulation in the US? Though L’Oréal’s original Voluminous is the top of the top, the Lash Paradise flanker is neck-in-neck with it.

Just one coat of this was shockingly similar to the $27 Better Than Sex mascara from Too Faced (which I will get to soon). Feathery, separated, literally clump-free lashes with the appearance of an increased lash count. The definition is exceptional, and the volume added with a single coat is subtle—lashes are defined and noticeable, but not fat, clumpy, nor spidery. The length is also impressive, and the formula is lightweight enough to allow for a lifting curl. This is yet another “these are just my natural, super gorgeous lashes” mascara. I was also pleased with how easy it was to remove with just water, not even cleanser or micellar.

Of note: We also tried L’Oréal’s Voluminous Noir Balm ($9)—another iteration of Voluminous—which was a really unique, silky formula. While offering tons of length and volume, there was a bit of smudging and fall out (but it’s still a great option to check out!).

#6

benefit
Benefit Cosmetics They're Real! Lengthening Mascara — $27.00

I’m relatively certain that this mascara could survive a nuclear apocalypse. After 12 hours of travel, sleeping a full night without washing my face (I was tired, OK!!), and going another 12 hours on a work trip, it looked—and I cannot say this more strongly—flawless. Two friends involved in my review process told me that my second-day, slept-on mascara from Benefit was better than just-applied mascara from other brands, if not the best look of the week.

The wand is my favorite part—it’s BIG. It’s also spiky, firm and comb-like, and perfect for separating lashes to give a beautifully defined finished result (low key also looks like a miniature medieval torture device). All in all, I love it. It’s so good that it makes me want to try their magnetic mascara, too (apparently I’m not burnt out from trying 20 mascaras in the past month). The only con is that this formula is a touch tougher to remove at the end of the day. Not as rough as a waterproof mascara, but more of a challenge than the rest.

lancome
Lancôme Monsieur Big Volumizing Mascara — $27.00

One of my recent discoveries that spurred the idea for this mascara research was Monsieur Big from Lancôme. Grab this when you’re ready for a bold look. A thick-and-fluffy, volumizing spooly-brush allows you to create giant lashes, but the formula helps prevent the lashes from glomming together, even as they expand in thickness. What’s especially great about this one is that it’s not just a major volumizer—it also offers telescopic length. Monsieur “Big” literally lives up to its name.

I also had great success with longevity; no fallout, no smudging, and simple to remove. It is a wetter formula than average, so keep that in mind if you live in a humid area or are about to watch a tearjerker—it’s most likely not going to withstand additional moisture.

#4

ilia mascara
Ilia Fullest Volumizing Mascara — $28.00

It was so tough to choose between Ilia’s two mascaras—both were absolutely amazing. The powerhouse Limitless Lash lengthening mascara was just barely edged out by their Fullest volumizing mascara in this review, however. Though I have a personal preference toward the lengthening brush and formula, the impact from the volumizing formula was impressive—and not just on my lashes, but on a friend’s as well (it gave a serious wow factor). While the lengthening mascara’s brush is firm, spike-y, separating, and uniform in shape, the volumizer’s was fluffy and spooly-like, with an hourglass curve in the center (FWIW, this is pretty standard for the two respective types of mascara).

Both formulas are buildable without clumping, and just under two coats of the volumizing mascara makes for a bold yet understated look. To top it off, there’s no fallout, and removal is possible without eye makeup remover (we used a gentle cleanser and water). Overall, this collection of two vegan mascaras blew me away.

merit mascara
Merit Clean Lash Lengthening Mascara — $26.00

For naturally-enhanced looking lashes that look longer and more bold totally on their own (as though you’re not wearing anything at all!), you can’t beat Merit Clean Lash Lengthening mascara. This stuff blew me away. Its formula is also clump-free and ink-y enough, so I can swipe on a few layers before heading out the door, and I never have to worry about smudges. It’s truly a care-free mascara.

Its highlights include a special tubing technology which is what gives you that easy, no-smudge look while giving each individual lash more length, a precision brush that separates each lash for those Bambi eyes, and fatty acids and olive oil that moisturizes and adds shine. Plus, the mascara is super easy to take off—I generally don’t even need to use makeup remover. Water and my regular cleanser do the trick.

#2

dior show
Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara — $30.00

I’ve tried Diorshow and Diorshow Pump ‘N’ Volume, and have loved both, so I was eager to try one that was brand new to me: Dior’s “Iconic Overcurl” variety. As you may have imagined, the brush is curved—curled, if you will. Think: a spooly meets an eyelash curler. The formula on this Dior lash extender really is lightweight enough to allow for natural curling, sans tools. The combo of this levity with the curved applicator made for a delivered promise—curled back, voluminous, long lashes.

My lashes still felt soft to the touch once it dried—not crunchy or weighted down—and the morning application lasted for 12 hours on two different occasions (one of them being yet another long travel day), with absolutely no fall-out or smudging. It comes in gorgeous, whimsical-yet-sophisticated packaging, and is easy to remove with even just water (seriously, I didn’t even need soap… it melted off with a bit of warm H2O!).

#1

chanel mascara
Chanel Inimitable Intense Mascara — $32.00

I’m a biased reviewer for this one as it’s my absolute favorite, and has been for 15+ years. It’s got a solid lengthening-style brush with defining, comb-like bristles, and is buildable for many coats (though you likely won’t need more than, say, one and a half). The brush is also medium size, perhaps a bit on the smaller side, allowing for more control and precision.

This formula thickens, curls, lengthens, and defines, creating spectacular lashes that tread the line between false lashes and are-they-real natural. It lasts hours upon hours, with no fallout, no flaking, and no smudging. Even though it’s not waterproof, it can survive humid temperatures (and the occasional tears) without becoming runny. Sleek, luxurious packaging adds to the overall experience (gotta love those little Chanel Cs on the cap), and at the end of the day, it’s easy to take off.

9 Tips for Long-Lasting, Smudge-Free Makeup That Stands Out Under Your Glasses https://www.wellandgood.com/wearing-makeup-under-glasses/ Thu, 06 Oct 2022 23:00:16 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=920823 Applying makeup when you have glasses can be tricky. The nose pads can leave little indents in your foundation, the eye look you spent serious effort creating can seemingly fade away behind your lenses, and your mascaraed lashes might hit the lenses and smudge. But with some finesse, you can apply your makeup so that it really lasts behind your specs.

In a recent TikTok, digital content creator and makeup enthusiast Victoria Lyn shared some of her best tips for wearing makeup under glasses. We ran these tips by makeup artist Emily Amick, who also wears glasses, and got her professional stamp of approval, along with a few other goodies.

How to apply makeup under glasses

1. Apply your foundation from the outside of your face

“You can wear whatever foundation you want. The major key to getting it to last is working from the outside in, saving the nose for last,” says Lyn. “Just use whatever’s left on your brush to keep it light to avoid your glasses sinking in.”

Regardless of whether or not you’re wearing glasses, you don’t need to lay your complexion products on thick all over the face. “I’m a big proponent of using foundation and concealer sparingly and only full coverage where you need it,” says Amick.

2. Use powder on your nose pads

Even with a light application on the nose, you can still get those little indents where your nose pads are. To avoid this, Lyn recommends applying loose powder, like the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder ($24 to $40), both to the pads of your glasses and your nose. If you still notice indents, Amick says to “just gently pat your finger over them and the foundation will blend back in.”

3. Apply blush with your glasses on

Put on “blush with your frames on,” says Lyn. “This really helps you actually see your blush—it’s like a custom placement to your frames.”

4. Limit product anywhere your face may touch your lenses

“One problem I have when I wear glasses, since I have such big cheeks, is that when I smile sometimes the makeup on my cheeks transfers to the lenses,” says Amick, “so it’s definitely about understanding how an individual’s glasses fit their face and trying to limit the amount of product in areas where your glasses come into contact with your skin.” Amick also powders her cheeks to prevent makeup from transferring.

5. Balance your eye makeup

“My eyes get a little lost in my big frame so I like to use neutral shades to accentuate my I shape, a wing liner, and a nude liner in the waterline and inner corner because it makes my eyes look bigger,” says Lyn. “If your lenses magnify, try the smoky look—it’s so pretty.”

6. Keep your lashes curled and voluminous

Lyn recommends curling your lashes when you wear your glasses, and Amick agrees. “Some people’s lashes are so long they touch the inside of the lenses, so curling is a good idea,” says Amick.

Also, “go for volumizing mascara instead of lengthening,” says Lyn. “[It] keeps your lashes fluffy and not windshield wiping against your lenses. You can wear [false] lashes, make sure they’re short and voluminous.”

Sir John, the makeup artist to celebs like Beyoncé and Karlie Kloss, is a major fan of the L’Oréal Voluminous Mascara ($11). “You’ve got to have a good mascara. I do love the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Mascara ($10),” says Sir John, who serves as the brand’s creative director. “It’s my favorite mascara.”

7. Go bold with your brows

“Brows frame your frames, don’t be afraid to do a little fill and fluff them up—the bolder the better,” says Lyn.

8. Have fun pairing your makeup with your frames

If you have colored frames, you can coordinate your makeup with the lenses. “The matchy-matchy [look] is my fave,” says Lyn. “I love to do a neutral eye so I can add the color to my lips.”

9. Carry a lens cloth

Even when you take all the necessary precautions, you may get a bit of makeup on your lenses. “Always have a lens cloth ($6) with you to take care of any smudges on your lenses and frames,” says Amick.

2 Foolproof, Makeup Artist-Approved Methods for Creating a Smudge-Free Cat Eye on Mature Skin https://www.wellandgood.com/cat-eye-mature-skin/ Thu, 22 Sep 2022 00:00:26 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=915949 The perfect cat eye, with its great sense of drama and a lineage that extends back to Cleopatra, has always been one of my favorite looks. Depending on how you draw it, it can imbue a face with sexiness, haughtiness, elegance, cuteness, strength, or eccentricity.  But as the passage of time has started to show itself on my 65-year-old skin, I’ve learned that it’s an incredibly difficult look to create on eyes with wrinkles or drooping.

I started asking makeup artists how I could do a cat eye “at my age” quite some time ago—ever since my usual application method left me with lines that looked like bad handwriting—and always got the same response: “Sorry, you can’t. It’s impossible. Also, have you considered Botox?” But I’ve persisted in my quest, and am happy to report that yes, there are definitely ways to do a cat eye—even on a face that has crow’s feet and sagging lids. The trick is to use tools, products, and techniques designed for the job, and there are two methods that can help you get it right.

The eyeshadow method

According to makeup artist Dakota Alexandra, cat eyes can be challenging to create on mature skin because liner is more prone to creasing, flaking, or bleeding when it’s applied on top of wrinkles. To combat this, she recommends using eyeshadow in lieu of your typical pencil.

1. Start with a primer

Priming your lids is an important (and oft-forgotten) step that will keep your cat eye clear and smudge-free. “A good primer always helps,” says Dakota. She’s a fan of Milk Makeup’s Hydro Grip Eyeshadow and Concealer Primer ($25), which is clear, for locking makeup in place, but notes that you may want to opt for an opaque product (like About Face Shadow Fix Prime) if you want a stronger color payoff from your liner.

2. Create your base with a shadow stick

“Use a black eyeshadow powder or cream to create the line rather than a pen or liquid, because sometimes liquids settle into lines or bleed a bit,” she says. She recommends Laura Mercier’s Caviar Eye Stick in Tuxedo ($32), which you can use to set your base before perfecting the shape with a brush. Just keep in mind that this stick has a medium-sized tip, so you’ll want to angle it carefully to ensure you’re initial line doesn’t become too wide.

3. Shape and blend with a small brush

To create the winged tipped—arguably the most important part of the cat eye—use a small detail brush to blend out the creamy shadow. “It diffuses nicely for a smoked-out look,” says Dakota.

Following her advice, I primed my eyes with the Milk primer, which gave my lids a light sheen of brightness that made my eyes pop. Then, I created my initial line using the Laura Mercier eye stick, keeping it very close to my lashes, and smoothed it with the Beautyblender brush (above), which made it easy to create that final sweep at the edge of the eye. The end result was a deep, rich cat eye strong enough to stand on its own without the addition of shadow or shading.

The stamp method

If drawing a cat eye with the above method still feels too challenging, try an eyeliner stamp. These products are ultra-popular on social media, and make applying the perfect wing seamlessly easy for even the unsteadiest hands.

1. Start with a thin, dark pencil

Start by lining the edge of your lashes with a dark pencil, getting as close to your lash line as possible. I like the Shiseido Microliner Ink Pencil ($22) because the tiny tip gives me a clean, tight line that doesn’t budge until I take it off.

2. Re-line with a softer, lighter pencil

Next, use a softer, lighter pencil (I use MAC’s Colour Excess Tat Last Gel Pencil ($23)) and add another line directly above the first. Extend it out and slightly up at the outside edge of the eye, which will blend and soften the line right at the edge of your crow’s feet.

3. Stamp on your wing

This is where the magic happens. I’m a fan of the Kaja Wink Stamp ($29), which delivers the perfect cat eye shape with minimal effort. I stamp it on at the outer edge of my eye, above any creasing. I love that it creates a wing at a slightly higher angle than the brush method allows, which draws attention to the higher points of my face.

I May Be Over 40, but I Will *Never* Stop Wearing Bright, Colorful Makeup—Here’s Why https://www.wellandgood.com/colorful-eyeshadow-mature-skin/ Wed, 07 Sep 2022 01:00:42 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=909109 Recently, I came across an advertisement for a line of makeup specifically meant for “mature” women—aka those of us 40 and over. While the company’s message was inspiring (it’s great to see brands speaking to my oft-forgotten demographic), the neutral lipstick shades it had on display were decidedly… not.

As older women, we’re often made to believe that neutral, natural-looking makeup is the only “flattering” option for our complexions. On the rare occasion that a woman over 40 is featured in a beauty ad, she’s almost always shown wearing nude lipstick and barely-there eyeshadow. But “older” doesn’t have to mean “boring,” and just because I’m “mature” doesn’t mean I want to stop expressing myself with makeup.

I’ve spent the past two decades experimenting with beauty, and one of the cornerstones of my personal style is vibrant, heavily pigmented eyeshadow. Green has long been my go-to, in part because it plays up my hazel eyes, but also because I believe that it perfectly expresses who I am: a youthful, free-spirited, old soul with an ample amount of rock star attitude. But now that I’ve reached the “mature” demo, I’ve found that the beauty industry is constantly trying to convince me that I need to swap out my brightly-colored makeup in lieu of something more “age-appropriate,” or, beige.

But just like not all younger women love only colorful makeup (Well+Good’s 31 beauty editor, for example, wears exclusively browns and golds), not all mature women love only neutrals. Look at Gwen Stefani, who, at 52, still regularly wears a red lip and bold eyeliner. Or Madonna, who debuted hot pink hair the same week she celebrated her 64th birthday. Or Debbie Harry and Stevie Nicks, who have both been rocking bright beauty looks well into their seventies. Though all of these women are over 40, they’ve refused to let society dictate their beauty choices—and I’ve committed to doing the same.

While there are certain beauty trends from my youth that I wouldn’t want to revisit (let’s just say I’m fine to leave my brown lipstick phase back in my teens), I don’t buy into the philosophy that I need to adhere to certain expectations of how I “should” look simply because I’m not in my 20s anymore. As we age, we have no choice but to adapt to the changes in our bodies and lives, but we do have a choice in how we use makeup.

I’m not that different from who I was two decades ago, and I can strongly declare that nothing is going to deter me from staying true to who I am, and—of course—wearing my beloved green eyeshadow. Keep scrolling to shop my favorite products.

Makeup Revolution X Tammi Tropical Carnival Shadow Palette — $15.00

The London-based cosmetic company Makeup Revolution teamed up with beauty content creator Tammi Clarke to create this island celebration-inspired eyeshadow palette. Among the rainbow of 18 ultra-bright reds, purples, oranges, and blues are three stunning shades of green. I do love the striking “Saint Catherine” and the deeper “Definitely,” but when I break out this palette, I’m immediately going for the shimmering, emerald-hued “Greenz.” Whether as an accent or the main color, its brilliance will instantly transport you to a fête in the tropics.

Urban Decay 24/7 Shadow — $19.00

While the Urban Decay eyeshadows I used for many years were discontinued (R.I.P., Mildew), the brand’s reconfigured line of single shadows still boasts a great range of colors and finishes. While the champagne-shaded Sin and the golden-brown Half Baked are the only hues to return from the original lot, you can bet that I’m partial to “Psych,” a gold glitter-laced dark metallic green. As a solitary shade on my lid, it doesn’t just grab attention—it commands it.

Rimmel London Magnif’eyes Colour Eyeshadow Palette — $6.00

The affordability of Rimmel London’s Magnify’eyes palettes makes them ideal for anyone who likes plenty of shadow options without spending a lot of coin. Alongside the neutral shades in this Colour collection, there are electric and deep blues, a shimmery golden yellow, and bright and hunter greens. I apply a lighter green across my lid, then dust the darker shade outward from the center of my crease to create a fierce, dimensional eye.

Morphe X Lisa Frank 35B by Lisa Frank Artistry Palette — $30.00

If you were a child in the 80s, you are more than familiar with the cultural phenomenon that was Lisa Frank. Her whimsical designs and super-bright shades were everywhere, and thanks to Los Angeles-based Morphe, you can tap into your love for that nostalgia with this palette. Containing a whopping 35 eyeshadows in graduated shade groups, you may never run out of color combinations. Including the neon green “Peekaboo” and deep, dark “Forrest,” green shadow lovers get one complete row (and part of a second) of verdant vibrance.

‘I’m a Makeup Artist, and These Are the 3 Golden Rules for Faking a Smooth Finish on Textured Skin’ https://www.wellandgood.com/makeup-textured-skin/ Thu, 04 Aug 2022 23:00:48 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=896675 Whether it’s wrinkles, acne scars, or enlarged pores, everyone has a bit of texture on their skin—and (despite what Instagram filters may have you believe) no amount of makeup can make it disappear. But with proper application, you can make sure you’re not making the texture more apparent, explains Emily Amick, a makeup artist in New York City.

“I’m really passionate about having a realistic approach to what makeup can do for you and what you’re comparing yourself to because the images that we see on a flat glossy magazine or iPhones are edited beyond belief,” says Amick. In other words, if you saw the same skin in person, its texture would be far more visible. “It’s just keeping that in mind and having a realistic expectation of what you can achieve at home and what a makeup artist can do for you is important. People are like, ‘How do I keep all this concealer from falling into my under-eye lines?’ I’m like, ‘You can’t. Nobody can. It will do that.'”

While you can’t camouflage your texture (which is fine! because skin texture is totally normal and natural), if it’s something that bothers you,  you can make sure you’re not accentuating it with your makeup. To do that, Amick has three golden rules for applying makeup to textured skin.

How to apply makeup to textured skin

1) Prioritize prep

“Skin prep is really important, so make sure that you wash your face every night, moisturize well, and use actives that are right for you—serums…are going to improve your skin over time,” says Amick. Retinoids and exfoliants (like alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids) are your best bet for smoothing out the texture of fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars. When it comes to pores, you can’t actually make them smaller (it’s genetics!), but keeping them clean and gunk-free with these actives can make a difference in how they look.

Differin Acne Treatment
Differin Adapalene Gel 0.1% Acne Treatment — $14.00

This gel is a great retinoid to start with, as it’s one of the most potent OTC options (and, bonus! It’s available at the drugstore). Retinoids are vitamin-A derivatives that speed up cell turnover and stimulate collagen production, which helps smooth out pre-existing texture and prevent new lines and wrinkles from forming.

A gray bttle of Paula's Choice liquid exfoliant.
Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant — $11.00 to $32.00

Slough off dead skin cells and keep your pores clear with this gentle exfoliating liquid from Paula’s Choice. It’s a great product, and at $32 for the largest size, you’re getting a good bang for your buck.

2. Use a makeup primer

“I’m not a big primer person, but if someone has a lot of texture, really noticeable pores, and things like that, there are primers that you can use for that that are a short-term fix just for the day,” says Amick.

“Primers have a very silky consistency that can blur the appearance of lines and pores,” makeup artist Jenny Patinkin previously told Well+Good. Makeup artists agree that these formulas can help smooth out the appearance of textured skin because they prevent foundation from settling into pores.

Tatcha The Silk Canvas Protective Primer
Tatcha The Silk Canvas Protective Primer — $24.00 to $54.00

Amick loves this texture-smoothing primer from Tatcha. “It’s almost like a balm… it’s really good for pores,” she says. Living up to its name, this primer uses thin layers of silk to keep skin smooth. It’s also got antioxidants to fight off environmental stressors and a complex of three anti-aging nutrients to reveal soft, mirror-finish skin over time.

Indeed Labs Nanoblur Cream
Indeed Labs Nanoblur Cream — $16.00

If you have really oily skin, a mattifying primer is your best friend. “I am loving this one,” says Amick. Its blurring technology minimizes the appearance of pores and helps curb oil production, giving you a smooth, clear canvas on which you can apply the rest of your routine.

3. Remember: Less is more

“Using less of anything will look better than putting a lot of something on your face that will then move and sink and make [texture] more noticeable,” says Amick. “If you have a lot of wrinkles or a lot of scarring or whatever the case may be, you want to find a product that you can use very little of and still enhance. If you’ve got a lot of wrinkles under your eyes, you don’t want to be using the amount of concealer that you see the girls on TikTok using. That will just enhance it because it will settle.”

Instead of layering on concealer, just use a dab. And if you also want to camouflage discoloration, use a bit of color corrector first.

“You only want to use a little bit of color corrector and a tiny bit of concealer where the problem is and stop there,” she says. “I like a really high coverage foundation that you only have to use the tiniest bit. Danessa Myricks Vision Cream Cover ($28) is a good example of that. Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer ($34) is a great example of that, but you have to be in the practice of using very little.”

Exa High Fidelity Balancing Color Correctors
Exa High Fidelity Balancing Color Corrector — $27.00

This color corrector comes in six different shades so you can pick the best one for your skin tone and your skin concern. Red, peach, pink, and orange all work to counterbalance purple tones in your skin (think: undereye bags and acne scars), while green and yellow camouflage redness.

Danessa Myricks Vision Cream Cover
Danessa Myricks Vision Cream Cover — $28.00

Available in 28 shades, this concealer-foundation hybrid is great at evening out your complexion. Just keep in mind that you need way less than you think—a few quick dabs should do the trick.

Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer
Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer — $34.00

This full-coverage foundation is designed to enhance and disappear into the skin, as long as you don’t cake it on. Apply with a sponge (for light coverage), your fingers (for medium coverage), or a brush (for full coverage) depending on what look you’re trying to achieve.
